It is an exciting time to join the McConnell Dowell Whānau as we grow our presence in Gisborne and continue to secure complex projects across New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

We are now looking for a Site Engineer to join our high performing project team in the delivery of Wharf 7 project in Gisborne.





The Project

This is a major milestone for the port and the region . The original wharf was built in the 1960s and needs replacing. By September 2023, we will have demolished and rebuilt Wharf 7 to create a vital and resilient lifeline asset that will support Tairāwhiti’s growing exports. It will be strong enough to accommodate the three new mobile harbour cranes that arrived recently, and will be capable of withstanding a one-in-2500-year earthquake event, providing significant regional resilience in the event of a natural disaster.

About the role

The Site Engineer is responsible for ensuring the effective coordination and control of engineering works through the activities of technical, engineering, inspection, scheduling, planning, survey, procurement and quality control.

• Ensure project deliverables meet with CEP(s) (Construction Execution Procedures), JSEA(s) (Job Safety and Environmental Assessment), and ITP(s) (Integrated Test Plan)
• Management of project team, subcontractors and local labour crew
• Adherence to company safety, environmental and quality policies and procedures
• Ensure all plant is maintained regarding suitability, safety, operating condition and cost effectiveness
• Build trusted relationships with suppliers, Government, and Commercial partners
• Prepare and supply monthly, weekly and one-off reporting

Here’s what you’ll need:

• A tertiary civil engineering qualification
• A minimum of 3+ years’ civil engineering within the construction industry
• A demonstrated strong commitment to safety
• Ability to work and comfortable to reside in remote locations
• Competent in negotiation and relationship building accompanied with a good understanding of contract management and cost control
• Flexibility and resilience in dealing with complex issues
