Careers That Change Lives
As a member of the Medtronic Diabetes – Continuous Glucose Monitoring Sensor R&D organization, this Principal Engineer will assist with the ideation, design, and development of Medtronic’s next-generation continuous glucose monitoring system (CGM). The Principal Scientist position is in the Sensor Research group of the Sensor R&D Organization. The main function of this group is to understand and apply scientific principles to improve glucose sensor performance. Successful candidates will collaborate among Sensor R&D stakeholders to drive the activities to build prototype devices for in-vitro, pre-clinical, and clinical studies followed by reporting out analysis. A successful candidate will be able to understand the technical landscape of biosensors, formulate new designs and processes, perform/oversee experiments, and review in-vitro and in-vivo results related to these efforts.
A Day in the Life
Provide technical leadership in electrochemical biosensor design, with core competencies in electrochemical first principles, material science, enzymes, formulation, and polymer coatings.
Focus on early-phase sensor prototyping and testing in in-vitro, pre-clinical, and clinical settings. This includes leading the proof of concept, feasibility, process feasibility, and device implementation of novel materials (e.g. redox mediator, enzymes, electrode materials, polymer materials, and enzymes).
Collaborate across teams to bring new technologies from benchtop feasibility to clinical maturity.
Work with other engineers and technicians to execute experiments and accomplish project objectives.
Responsible for hands-on laboratory experiments, process development, data analysis, troubleshooting, and writing technical documentation.
Manage an agreed-upon schedule to achieve project goals in a fast-paced environment within predetermined timelines and resources
Work independently with minimal supervision and mentor junior engineers.
Communication with management on a regular basis through presentations and reports, and the individual must have the ability to effectively convey project updates to internal and external stakeholders (e.g. vendors, equipment manufacturers, etc.)
The position will require maintaining substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories and may contribute to scientific literature, and conferences in diabetes therapy.
Contribute to the development of patent applications.
Must Have: Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this role, please ensure the minimum requirements are evident on your resume
Bachelor’s Degree with 7+ years of experience in the field of electrochemical biosensors, biomaterials, polymer engineering, or related areas or an advanced degree with a minimum of 5+ years in the field of electrochemical biosensors, biomaterials, polymer engineering, or related areas.
Nice to Have
Preferred (but not required) direct experience in glucose monitoring, battery or fuel cell research in an industrial setting.
A breadth of theoretical and practical knowledge of biosensor technology fundamentals.
Experience with the electrochemical characterization of biosensors.
Experience in the evaluation of physiological signals using advanced techniques including chemistry, electrochemistry, spectroscopy, or mechanical methods.
Polymer material fundamentals and coating technology experience.
Strong understanding of material/biological interfaces.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and projects.
Strong scientific track record demonstrating well-organized design and execution of studies
Experience with the design of experiments (DOE) for multi-factor experimentation and relevant statistical techniques when analyzing data (T-test, ANOVA, and significance testing at a minimum).
Prior professional experience working in a cleanroom for laboratory experimentation and manufacturing.
Proven problem-solving skills, collaborative nature, and adaptability across disciplines.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team-based environment
Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills. Fluent verbal and written English language skills.
