Position Summary The Department Plant Soil and Microbial Sciences at Michigan State University, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources is seeking a Research Technician. The research covers a broad array of topics such as bean disease screening, genetics, germplasm enhancement, genetic engineering and gene editing for pest resistance and quality traits. The Lab uses a wide variety of experimental approaches, including molecular biology, genomics, bioinformatics, and plant transformation/gene editing which are applied to projects related bean improvement. Conduct disease screening of bean germplasm in the greenhouse; identify new pathogens affecting bean production in Michigan and elsewhere; continue to develop molecular markers associated with disease resistance traits; be responsible for the daily running of the lab, data compilation of all work conducted; resources for students and visitors. Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or other related field; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques in the specific or related field; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job may require the appropriate pesticide applicator”s registration/certification and/or experience working with potentially dangerous research animals. Desired Qualifications Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or related field; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic and applied research techniques in the specific or related field; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with potato research, DNA analysis, disease testing and tissue culture are highly valued.
