The Ministry of Health’s Transformation Programme
As kaitiaki or steward of Aotearoa New Zealand’s health system, Manatū Hauora – Ministry of Health regulates the health sector and is the Government’s primary source of advice on health matters. We provide leadership to our health and disability partner agencies, and drive strategy and performance. Our goal is simple but ambitious: we want all New Zealanders to achieve pae ora | healthy futures.
Our health system, like others around the world, is under pressure as a result of COVID-19, preventable health conditions, workforce challenges, infrastructure, increasing demand and an ageing population. Addressing these issues require us to think strategically and creatively, and to work together across the health system and beyond.
These challenges are why the Government put in place the health reforms last year – the largest health transformation in recent history. While Manatū Hauora’s role in the reformed health system remains the same, we need to become a stronger and more effective leader of ourselves and others, if we are to be the best Ministry we can be. That’s why we’ve established a Transformation Programme to drive long-term improvements, grow our skills, ensure we are resourced with the right capabilities and make sure we are the right size to fulfil our core role as leaders and kaitiaki of the health system.
We are setting the Ministry up to be better able to respond to global trends that are affecting health systems all over the world. The steps we are taking now will put us in a stronger position to lead the system that supports New Zealanders to live longer, healthier lives.
Do you share the Manatū Hauora vision? Do you believe all New Zealanders should be able to access quality health care, no matter who or where they are? Do you agree it’s not enough for some groups of people to have good health outcomes while others are left behind? Do you want to ensure the health system meets it obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, addresses Māori health aspirations and significantly improves health outcomes, particularly for Māori, Pacific peoples and disabled people?
Be part of this change to make sure New Zealanders are cared for by a health system that is innovative, future focussed and world leading.
