Kind of WorkThis is skilled journeyman level carpentry work in building and repairing structures and furnishings of wood.Examples of Work(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.)iLays out the working details of and performs the skilled operations involved in the construction and maintenance of building appurtenances, floors, roofs, stairways, doors, windows, screens, scaffolding forms, bridges, wharves or docks.i Performs hand and bench work in a carpenter shop in the construction of simple wooden furniture or fixtures.iiAssigns tasks to workers in the carpenter shop.iiEstimates amount of materials, supplies and time needed to perform the job.iiSharpens hand and power saws, tools and knives.iiFrames and builds additions to buildings.iiBuilds cabinets.iiDoes sheetrock work.iiDoes Formica work.iiLays floor tile.iiCleans work area.iiOperates spray gun for roofing materials.iiWorks as locksmith.iiObtains parts to repair existing hardware.iiRepairs fences and playground equipment.iCompletes time sheets, work orders, and material lists.iiPerforms related work as required.iMinimum Qualification RequirementsGraduation from a standard senior high school, or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test, completion of a trade school or apprenticeship program in carpentry and a minimum of one year journeyman level carpentry experience; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.Essential Requirements of the WorkGood knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and practices of the carpenter trade.iiGood knowledge of a variety of types and brands of construction and maintenance materials.iGood knowledge of basic math.iAbility to keep records and make reports.i Ability to work from plans and specifications.iiAbility to follow rough sketches and oral instructions.iiAbility to estimate time and materials needed to complete a project.iiAbility to operate carpentry, construction and woodworking equipment and tools.iiAbility to lay out work for self and others.iiAbility to perform all types of carpentry and building repair work.iiAbility to work under dangerous conditions.Special RequirementMust possess a valid driver’s license from state of residence.Distinguishing Features of the WorkAn employee in this class is responsible for laying out the details of and performing a variety of skilled operations in completing assignments.i Work is performed in accordance with accepted procedures for this trade under the general supervision of a Carpenter Supervisor or other superior assigned to inspect the completed work.i Considerable independence of action is allowed in completing assignments.i A Carpenter must be able to lift items weighing over 40 pounds.
