MongoDB Hiring for Software Engineer, Labs Job at Sydney, Australia Full Time

MongoDB Labs is a division tasked with identifying and exploring technologies that have the potential to substantially grow MongoDB’s business. We hire software engineers with research experience who can perform experiments and communicate their findings. The ideal Labs engineer has strong communication skills and the ability to develop an original research agenda, while still being a team player.

We are remote optional through January 10, 2022. Afterwards, this role will be in-office with flexibility, in the Sydney or Melbourne office long-term.

The ideal candidate for this role will have

• Honours or Masters in Computer Science or equivalent industry experience
• 3+ years commercial experience developing software or a PhD in Computer Science
• Experience conducting experimental tests in databases, distributed systems or related fields
• Experience contributing to research projects and working with researchers and/or engineers
• Curiosity, a positive attitude, and a drive to always learn something new
• Strong verbal and written technical communication skills and desire for cross-team collaboration

You might be a phenomenal fit if you

• Have experience developing, testing and maintaining code in one or more of the following:
• Machine learning frameworks for Python (e.g., Tensorflow, PyTorch, Pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn)
• Enterprise or cloud application development in Java, Go or Rust
• Distributed and/or concurrent software in C/C++

Position Expectations

• Develop and maintain expertise in the modern practice and research of database systems and data analytics
• Prototype and evaluate new technologies or enhancements to existing products with the potential to grow MongoDB’s business
• Communicate both to engineers and product managers the costs and benefits of potential solutions to problems faced by MongoDB customers
• Collaborate with engineers across projects in Labs
• Estimate task complexity and report progress and risks to peers and managers
• Learn from and teach peers and junior engineers

Success Measures

Within 3 months you will:

• Familiarise yourself with MongoDB’s products and query language
• Have an overview of product roadmaps
• Join a research project led by a senior engineer in Labs

Within 6 months you will:

• Plan an experiment, describing goals and method to answer a question
• Internal publication of a report evaluating a new technology or product direction

Within 12 months you will:

• Complete a multi-month research project that proposes a new feature or product
