Job Description
We are currently seeking a Principal-level professional with expertise in carbon advisory and net zero to join our Advisory Climate Change team in Auckland, New Zealand, and take on an inspiring role in developing and delivering our services in this domain.
The ideal candidate, with a strong background in a similar capacity, will be entrusted with the inspiring task of leading the provision of climate change consultancy services for a diverse array of projects. These projects encompass various aspects, such as conducting whole life carbon assessments for infrastructure, implementing climate change mitigation actions, developing climate change strategies, promoting net-zero initiatives, and providing valuable advisory services. The role encompasses both long-term and short-term projects and will be instrumental in expanding and diversifying the scope of climate advisory services we provide.
In this role, you will play a leading role in expanding and nurturing our Carbon and Net Zero advisory services, which encompass climate risk, transition planning, nature-based solutions, and the circular economy. You will guide and oversee carbon and climate change projects, including conducting comprehensive whole life carbon assessments and implementing carbon management in infrastructure projects across sectors. Your responsibilities will involve providing technical expertise and strategic counsel to clients, aligning their policies, strategies, plans, and business processes with their climate change objectives, net zero aspirations, and climate risk disclosure requirements. You will actively engage clients, support business development initiatives, foster internal and external collaborations, and contribute to the management, mentoring, and recruitment of junior staff.
Candidate Specification
We are seeking candidates who possess essential qualifications, such as a relevant degree or post-graduate qualifications, or equivalent professional experience in the field of carbon and net zero. Moreover, we highly value knowledge of Aotearoa New Zealand’s legislation, policy, and frameworks pertaining to carbon, net zero, climate change, and climate risk disclosure, as well as familiarity with international frameworks, best practices, methodologies, and standards associated with carbon management, net zero, and climate change, including ISO14064, the GHG Corporate Protocol, PAS2060, PAS2080, and the SBTi’s Net Zero Standard. Proficiency in carbon assessment and reduction tools like eTool, One Click LCA, and the Moata Carbon Portal, in addition to being well-versed in relevant data shared by BRANZ and MfE, is also highly desired. Ideally, candidates should have active involvement in industry initiatives, projects, and commitments aimed at reducing the carbon impact of energy, transportation, construction, and the built environment, thus making a positive contribution towards sustainability.
Candidates should bring a wealth of experience in spearheading the execution of significant infrastructure and/or corporate carbon assessments, GHG inventory projects, and establishing emissions reduction targets. They should also exhibit a proven history of successfully leading carbon management and net zero projects across diverse project categories, ensuring seamless delivery within the defined scope, maintaining exceptional quality, and adhering to allocated budgets. Additionally, candidates should possess exceptional skills in engaging with clients, particularly at senior levels, and demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate messages to the indented audience in a persuasive and influential manner.
In addition to their experience, candidates should embody qualities such as adaptability and agility, enabling them to think strategically and embrace the holistic perspective while effectively managing day-to-day intricacies. They should demonstrate a collaborative and self-reliant nature, proactively taking responsibility and assuming ownership of project delivery and workflows. Strong communication skills, encompassing the ability to compose comprehensive reports and deliver captivating client presentations, are paramount. Additionally, possessing strong numerical and analytical skills, including proficiency in tools like Excel, is indispensable for this role.
Valued qualifications for a candidate entail extensive experience in Mott MacDonald’s core sectors, which encompass transport, built environment, water and energy. Other desirable attributes encompass a deep understanding of low-carbon materials, both international and New Zealand climate risk disclosure frameworks, physical climate change risks, adaptation and resilience strategies, and the principles of the circular economy. Furthermore, being well-versed in carbon management, holding membership in a relevant professional institution, and demonstrating proficiency in managing and recruiting junior staff are highly esteemed.
