Summary This position is a Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor, WS-4749-10 located in Grand Canyon National Park, the Facility Management Division. Please visit find a park or additional park information. This position is open to National Park Service (NPS) current permanent employees and employees that meet Land Management Authority. Responsibilities Responsibilities: Prepare and monitor an annual operating budget for maintenance and operation of buildings and quarters at the North Rim, and Tuweep. Supervise carpentry trade worker( s) in the construction, alteration, modification or repair of a wide range of features in buildings. Oversee layout, installation or replacement of sewer pioine:, lavatories, pumps and water meters. Supervise all painting, varnishing, etc. functions to include marbling, graining, speckling, tinting and toning of paint, and matching existing colors. Area Information: This positions is located on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. The North Rim receives approximately 500,000 visitors between May 15 and October 15. The North Rim has a robust concession operation which features a historic full service lodge with accommodations serving around 500 visitors each day, 230 concession employees, a general store, post office, mule ride concession, gas station, campground, etc. Outside of the North Rim Village the district includes about 20 miles of paved scenic roads, 80 miles of high clearance 4 wheel drive roads, and many miles of hiking trails. The North Rim Rangers are involved in the full range of visitor and resource protection activities during the busy summer season. Rangers frequently respond to law enforcement calls, emergency medical, structure and wild land fire, and search and rescue incidents. The ranger will work in both the front and back country areas and patrol the park by foot, patrol vehicle, and UTV. If selected, the candidate will be expected to respond to after hour call outs to provide service. This is an outstanding opportunity for a seasonal protection ranger to work in one of the largest visitor and resource protection programs in the national park service and to experience a wide variety of visitor and resource protection situations. The North Rim District is about 20 miles from the South Rim by a strenuous hike through the Grand Canyon or a 215 mile drive which takes approximately 4 hours. The elevation on the North Rim is about 8,500 feet and consequently the climate in the summer is mild with highs in the 80’s and lows in the 50’s. The terrain is composed of large stands of ponderosa pine, mixed conifer forests with aspen, outstanding scenic viewpoints, and meadows filled with wildflowers. The nearest community with full range of services is located in Kanab, UT which is 80 miles to the North. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications To qualify, there is no specific length of training or experience required; however, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to show your ability to perform the duties of a Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor with the Ability To Lead Or Supervise. Examples of such experience include: (1) leading workers in proper trades and labor methods in the maintenance and repair of facilities; (2) instructing others in the plans, blueprints, materials, and tools needed to maintain historic non-residential structures; (3) performing with installation, maintenance, repair and construction work in building maintenance trades, such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, HVAC, roofing and/or painting; (4) complying with safety program directives to ensure a safe work environment. Work Environment: The Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor supervises a work force that is spread over a large and diverse park area. The incumbent is sometimes required to travel to remote job sites. The program operates in a broad, topographically diverse, geographic area consisting of more than 1.2 million acres, with elevations ranging from 2,200 to 8,000 feet. Education There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. Occupancy of government quarters is required. If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.
