Post Doctoral Scientist – Yr 1-3 KerlinRequisition ID2021-29923CategoryResearchOverviewPost Doctoral Scientist – Yr 1-3 KerlinAn NIH-funded postdoctoral position is available in the Kerlin Research Laboratory within the Center for Clinical and Translational Research of the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The NIH-funded project will focus on understanding coagulation signaling in glomerular cells via the Protease-Activated Receptor (PAR) family of GPCRs. Individuals with expertise in molecular and cellular biology who are interested in working with an interdisciplinary group to drive discovery of the mechanisms by which coagulation signaling drives chronic kidney disease progression are encouraged to apply. Experience in coagulation biochemistry, coagulation signaling, and/or kidney disease pathogenesis is desirable but not required. The work will center on the use of transgenic mouse models of kidney disease and coagulation signaling complemented by work in genetically manipulated cell culture models. Required skills include cloning, directed mutagenesis, cell culture transfection and expression, and protein expression and purification. Recent discoveries from the Kerlin Laboratory strongly suggest that thrombin generated within the glomerulus drives progression of chronic kidney disease toward end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). ESKD is a leading cause of death and ESKD-related mortality is predominantly due to cardiovascular morbidity (e.g. myocardial infarction and stroke). Thus, the long-term goal of our research is to reveal key mechanistic interactions between the coagulation and kidney systems and identify novel molecular targets with potential to slow or halt kidney disease progression. Post-Doctoral Scientists work under the mentorship of an established Abigail Wexner Research Institute (AWRI) Principal Investigator to design and conduct experiments in a specific area of research. From the results of studies, helps to develop hypotheses for further investigation. Prepares technical materials such as abstracts, annual reports, scientific manuscripts, and presentations. Publishes manuscripts in appropriate refereed journals. Works toward a goal of becoming independent in his/her research effort, and eventually obtaining external research funding.
