South Coast Field Operations Technician

The Nature Trust of British Columbia is a leading non-profit land conservation organization dedicated to protecting critical habitat for wildlife, fish, and plants in BC. Since 1971, we have secured 180,000 acres of ecologically significant land.

The Nature Trust of British Columbia is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our team as a Field Operations Technician for the South Coast Region. This is a full-time permanent position based in Vancouver, B.C. The South Coast Field Operations Technician will report directly to the Interior & Coastal Mainland Conservation Land Manager.

The South Coast Field Operations Technician will provide technical assistance and supervision for a variety of habitat restoration projects and site maintenance activities on conservation holdings in the South Coast Region and some limited activities in other regions of the province.

For this unique position, we are looking for a suitable candidate with a broad skillset and willingness to take on roles ranging from habitat restoration, public engagement, infrastructure maintenance, property inspection, to working alongside our partners, stakeholders and volunteer groups. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to work with some of the leading conservation organizations in British Columbia as well as the provincial and federal governments.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Coordination, hiring, and supervision of the South Coast Conservation Field Crew.
• Conducting operations and maintenance activities throughout the South Coast Region.
• Working with post-secondary students to recommend and oversee semester-long research projects on NTBC properties in the South Coast Region.
• Conducting ecological monitoring activities on NTBC properties.
• Liaising with South Coast Region conservation land management partners, including Ducks Unlimited Canada, Province of BC, researchers, volunteers, and neighbours, regarding operations and maintenance projects.
• Organizing, recruiting for, and implementing community restoration events, including making presentations to school and community groups.
• Organizing and implementing corporate donor field events in the South Coast region.
• Assisting the Interior & Coastal Mainland Conservation Land Manager with operations and maintenance in other regions of the Province.
• Annual reporting to funders.
• Preparing applications for land management project funding.
• Other duties as required.

Skills, Abilities, and Qualifications

• Post-secondary Degree or Technical Diploma in Environmental Science/ Geography/ Resource Management/ Forestry/ Fish & Wildlife, or related discipline.

OR

• Combination of post-secondary and related experience in the field of land management and ecological restoration.
• Knowledge and skill in the methods, tools and equipment, techniques, and materials used in restoration, landscaping, and maintenance work.
• Experience in the operation and safe handling of vehicles, tools, and equipment.
• Experience in supervising field crews.
• Strong awareness of workplace health and safety issues and a safety conscious attitude including experience with conducting field work.
• Knowledge of British Columbia’s flora and fauna with particular interest in sensitive, threatened, endangered species and ecosystems found within the South Coast Region.
• Experience working with Indigenous Groups and First Nations, partners and stakeholders in a collaborative environment is an asset.
• This position involves strenuous physical work in all weather conditions; sufficient physical strength, stamina and coordination are required.
• Occasional overnight travel will be required when conducting field activities in remote areas of the region.
• Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
• Must be legally allowed to work in Canada.

Job Location: The position will be based in Vancouver, but daily activities will take place throughout the South Coast region.

What we offer

NTBC is proud to offer generous vacation allowances, a robust health and dental plan, and an RRSP matching program. The salary range for this role is $55,000-$60,000, based on a 37.5 hour week; this role is eligible for overtime.
