New Zealand Customs Service | Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa is looking for a person to join our maritime team based in Auckland, as Senior Customs Officers Grade 2.
The Customs Maritime Unit (CMU) is seeking motivated individuals to join their flexible, highly trained and high performing team in Auckland.
Successful applicants are required to work well within a small team in a variety of sea, land and air environments. It is essential the incumbent can demonstrate the ability to self-manage, to work/live for extended periods in close proximity to other team members and contribute to the high performance of the team.

The key activity for the Customs Maritime Unit is to respond to any risk to the New Zealand maritime border. This involves; patrol; surveillance; and searching, detecting offences and preparing prosecution files. Regularly working alongside other agencies such as the NZ Police, MPI and the NZDF.
The Customs Maritime Unit provides coverage 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
This is not a nine-to-five job. You’ll be on the water for long periods and you’ll work on a roster, which means weekend work and odd hours when required. We understand the importance of life outside of work.
The salary range for this role is $75,971 – $96,013 plus an allowance of $15,640.

What’s Involved…
As part of the recruitment process, short listed candidates will be required to successfully pass a comprehensive medical and the CMU fitness test. Only those candidates who pass these tests will proceed to a panel interview.
Medical And Fitness Testing
On an annual basis, Customs Maritime Officers are required to pass a comprehensive medical assessment and pass a fitness test to the following standard;
Security Clearances
You will need to obtain Secret level national security clearance. In order to obtain this clearance you need to be a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 10 years and resides in NZ at time of application;
OR a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 10 years and resides in NZ at time of application, but may have been absent from New Zealand for periods of six or more months within the past 5 years, preferably in one or more of the following countries: *either Australia, Canada, UK or the USA. Small periods (3 months or less) of absence from New Zealand over the 10 years may still be acceptable however you must be able to provide police certificates for time spent in other countries*.
You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level. Already having Secret clearance is a benefit, but not a requirement.
Due to the nature of Customs work you must have a clear Police record. Successful applicants are also required to pass a medical assessment and drug test and must hold a full NZ Drivers’ licence.
Hours Of Work
This position is a full-time position (2088 hours per annum) worked flexibly, within a rostered work pattern, or flexible hours, to enable coverage for 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
