The Department of Corrections supports men living in our care as they progress on their journey towards re-entering the community. Our responsibility is guided by our Hōkai Rangi strategy which seeks to build the rangatira of each person through a supportive and humanising approach.

Ngā kawenga | About the role

In the role of librarian, you will use a strengths-based approach that embraces manaakitanga and whanaungatanga as you support the reading, literacy and educational development of each Tāne.

  • Operating a professional Library Service within our correctional facility
  • Working to the National Prison Libraries Service Delivery document
  • Providing library services to all prisoners including those in special focus and remand units
  • Develop, coordinate and maintain library resources, including books, periodicals and learning resources
  • Propose and manage an annual budget
  • Provide library information, reports and advice to the Learning and Interventions Delivery Manager
  • Train and monitor prisoner Library assistants
  • Ensure security is maintained at all times

You will be required to work effectively in a custodial environment – leading by example and maintaining professional boundaries. By interacting closely with the men in our care along with internal and external stakeholders, you will collaboratively share information and ensure beneficial outcomes are achieved. Key competencies you will demonstrate are:

  • A service focus – a helpful and courteous approach when dealing with others
  • Ability to communicate in a style appropriate to the recipient or audience
  • Experience working with Māori and Pasifika learners
  • A wide knowledge of books including those that may support varying levels of literacy
  • The ability to organise effectively, multi-task and meet deadlines
  • A high level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Resilience in managing multiple stakeholders and the ability to adapt well to changing demands
  • A high level of proficiency in computer software and database systems including the Microsoft office suite (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Preferably you will have experience using AccessIt library management system

Utu ā-tau | Salary

The salary range for this role is $60,811 – $65,601 per annum. Appointment and remuneration will reflect skills and experience relevant to the role.
