What’s the job?

Reporting to the Chief Engineer, Front End Lead Engineer is responsible for empowering front end teams and individuals to create a high performance engineering culture focusing on outcome-based approach and to ensure the Front End Engineering Community as a whole achieves their goals.

Front End Lead Engineer looks at technology from a business problem solving perspective and helps to build simple, clean, innovative, cost conscious, performant, and scalable solutions that timely deliver seamless experiences for stakeholders.

Front End Lead Engineer sees problems as opportunities, they draw on a breadth of skills, experience, explicit and tacit knowledge to tackle problems, uncovering the unknowns, eliminating surprises, and discovering opportunities, while striving to meet the actual business needs in a timely manner. They look at everything from site performance, operations, technical skill set, new technologies, potential cost savings, complexity, return on investment, and global alignment, to industry trends and available systems.

Front End Lead Engineer works closely with the Design Team to help realise their visions while delivering maintainable performant websites, they work very closely with front end engineers and leadership in other areas of the business to ensure an ongoing strong and healthy collaborative culture, and will quickly identify problems that need to be solved or escalated to upper management.

• Lead and support engineers in building simple, clean, innovative, people-centric, cost conscious, and scalable systems that will be delivered on time.
• Push for continuous improvement, while driving innovation and establishing new approaches in improving productivity and reducing platform cost.
• Engaging cross-functionally with engineers to develop concepts that advance the entire platform pipeline.
• Support with developing and driving execution of roadmaps.
• Provide support with end-end scalable system design, application architecture and workflows.
• Work closely with leaders to develop short and long-term strategies.
• Help manage expectations, and remain aligned to businesses goals.
• Deeply understand the business ecosystem, identify problems and solutions.
• Partner with key stakeholders to understand and anticipate their needs.
• Articulate the technology, requirements, goals and milestones of the Platforms.
• Provide context, support and guidance as the team works toward our business objectives — you will inspire, not merely direct.
• Self-navigate through high volumes of work, prioritise the right work to focus on.

• You can successfully communicate technical design and decisions to non-technical senior management.

The experience you will have:

• 6+ years proven experience in Front End web development
• Extensive knowledge of HTML / CSS / JavaScript (Both ES5 and ES6+)
• Experience with component libraries (such as Storybook)
• Experience with automated testing (such as Cypress)
• Experience with NodeJs, GIT, Front End build tools (Webpack), CI/CD (such as Travis, Github Actions, CiCircle), and CSS preprocessors
• Minimal reliance on libraries for UI development
• Architecture for websites to follow industry best practices for development.
• Optimise development for maximum speed and scalability
• Experience managing engineering teams including hiring/termination and performance management.
• Experience articulating the impact using metrics, growth examples, return, etc.
• Analytical and problem-solving experience with large-scale systems.
• Experience establishing work relationships across multi-disciplinary teams and multiple partners in different time zones.
