Ngāi Tahu Tourism Looking for Department of Conservation – Tahr Co-Governance Group at New Zealand Full Time

The Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu nomination and appointment process is being undertaken to appoint a Ngāi Tahu representative to the DOC Tahr Co-Governance Group.

Functions of the Tahr Co-Governance Group
DOC are tasked with developing and implementing the Tahr Control Plan (which currently involves maintaining the population at a maximum of 10,000 within DOC lands). DOC has historically worked with Ngāi Tahu as one of a number of stakeholders on the Tahr Liaison Group. However, following recent discussions DOC is now working alongside Ngāi Tahu as its Treaty Partner to develop improved governance arrangements.

Purpose of the role
The purpose of this role is to represent the Ngāi Tahu perspective to the Tahr Co-Governance Group ensuring that any issues of tribal significance are reported to Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu while also ensuring that tribal matters of significance are represented to the Group.

Required skills, experience and qualifications

• An interest in game hunting and Tahr recovery, preferably an experienced hunter.
• Knowledge of Tahr hunting matters and the many other hunting interests including recreational hunters, commercial hunters and farming operations.
• Knowledge of where Tahr are located in the takiwā and how they impact vegetation and other taonga.
• An understanding of Ngāi Tahu values as they relate to Tahr as modern mahinga kai, and an ability to promote and articulate these values.
• The time and energy for working with DOC staff, establishing and maintaining governance structures, meetings, reading and consultation.
• The ability to encourage the adoption of customary management practices where they are applicable.
• A willingness to meet with other Te Rūnanga representatives including Fish and Game Council, Species representatives and Conservation Board members.

Meeting details
After the establishment phase of the governance structure, the frequency of meetings is to be determined. Remuneration of $500 per meeting.
