Position Summary
This is a support assistant position reporting to the Director of Student Affairs and receiving direction of work from Department of Accessible Learning Services (DALS) Faculty Chairs. This position is responsible for providing accommodation assistance to students as identified by DALS.
The DALS Accommodation Support Assistant is aware of the Mission and Values of North Island College, incorporating and practicing the values in everything they do.
Position Competencies
Duties & Responsibilities
1. Distributes equipment as per student Accommodation letters;
2. Supports equipment and resource set up;
3. Troubleshoots technical issues and takes appropriate action;
4. Files requests with IT for service; effectively communicates repair timelines to Accessibility Services;
5. Provides assistance to faculty, staff and students in use of assistive technologies;
6. Provides mobility assistance for students;
7. Provide notetaking assistance in class;
8. Works collaboratively with students, faculty and staff as well as other departments to develop and maintain a positive work environment;
9. Understands confidentiality needs, in line with FIPPA requirements and North Island College’s record keeping policies;
10. Performs other related duties as required.
Required Education & Experience
1. Completion of a Human Services program certificate with specialized training and demonstrated expertise in the use of adaptive technology or an equivalent combination of education.
2. Minimum of 2 years experience working with students with disabilities. Thorough understanding of a wide range of disability-related accommodations.
Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities
1. Strong interpersonal communication skills that allow for effective communication.
2. Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
3. Understanding of the disability and privacy related policies and legislations.
4. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
5. Ability to work independently and as a collaborative and productive team member.
6. Experience with adaptive technology and software, including common computer applications such as: Kurzweil, Dragon Naturally Speaking and Read and Write.
7. Demonstrated technical ability to troubleshoot sources of equipment and software problems.
8. Proficiency in MS Office Programs, (e.g. Excel, Word).
9. Highly organized, with proven ability to multitask and respond effectively to non-routine situations.
10. Proven ability to work independently with a minimum of direct supervision and to establish priorities and to meet deadlines.
