As a frontline officer, you will be trusted and relied upon to assist members of the public in case of emergency, day or night. Over the course of your career, you will have the opportunity to experience many different specialized roles including Technical Collision Investigator, Scenes of Crime Officer and Mental Crisis Response Team member, to name a few. OPP members frequently receive enhanced training through the Provincial Police Academy to sharpen their skills and develop new areas of expertise.
Key Responsibilites:
EVERY POLICE OFFICER SHALL ABIDE BY THE PRINCIPLES OUTLINED IN S. 1 AND MAINTAIN THE ABILITY TO PERFORM THE DUTIES REQUIRED BY S.42 OF THE POLICE SERVICES ACT.
1. Patrols an assigned area, observes for violations and takes appropriate preventative or enforcement action; apprehends criminals, offenders and others who may be lawfully taken into custody; makes lawful arrests and searches; serves processes; executes warrants of committal and warrants to arrest; interviews accused persons and witnesses and testifies in judicial proceedings.
2. Encourages an open dialogue with all members of the community, encouraging community members to identify potentially hazardous or criminal situations; develops community contacts who could assist with accomplishing community service objectives.
3. Develops and maintains partnerships with a variety of community stakeholders with a focus on the prevention and reduction of crime and risks. Attends and participates in Community Policing Committee meetings, community surveys, or other forums for community consultation.
4. Assists victims of crime; administers first aid services in emergency situations to sustain life.
5. Maintains accurate records of activities, e.g. General Occurrence Reports and/or RMS, Traffic Reports, CPIC input forms, activity sheets and other law enforcement forms; inputs information onto computerized information systems; maintains a daily journal which thoroughly and chronologically details experienced, investigated or reported events and occurrences during each duty period.
6. Prepares court briefs and completes other judicial processes required to commence litigation in any court.
7. Collects, secures, preserves and disposes of evidence/property in accordance with established procedures.
8. Escorts and conveys prisoners or mentally incompetent person to and from courts, places of confinement, etc.
9. Maintains uniform and equipment in accordance with Police Orders. Operates a motor vehicle and, where training has been provided, a motorized snow vehicle, all terrain vehicle, vessel or other vehicle.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.
