The Group is structured across two divisions: Ornua Foods and Ornua Ingredients.
Ornua Foods is responsible for the marketing and sales of Ornua’s consumer brands including Kerrygold, Dubliner, Pilgrims Choice, Kerrygold, Avantage, Forto, and BEO. Markets are served by production facilities and in-market sales and marketing teams in Africa, Asia, Germany, Ireland, the UK, the rest of Europe, the Middle East, and the US.
Ornua Ingredients is responsible for the procurement of Irish and non-Irish dairy products and for the sale of dairy ingredients to food manufacturing and foodservice customers across the world. Ornua Ingredients is also responsible for managing volatility through de-risking and trading strategies. The business is supported by production facilities in Saudi Arabia, Spain, the UK, the US and by in-market teams in Africa and the Middle East.

Job Summary:
The Technical Inspector’s core role is to ensure that all products supplied to Ornua Cooperative Ltd comply with agreed quality and safety parameters, are legally compliant and meet customer requirements.
The role involves working closely with core suppliers / packers and in conjunction with the Technical Team to check, sample, inspect and analyse assigned product purchases to ensure all product is supplied with all relevant quality data and within specification. The post holder will also be responsible for identifying product to match customer requirements and to ensure that all stock records are accurate and relevant to market specifications.
The Technical Inspector will be familiar with all aspects of Ornua systems, such as stock management and results entry within the ERP system (Movex), management of current manufacturer and customer specifications on the Ornua Quality Management System (QUBE) and management and resolution of non-conformances issues. The incumbent will be expected to drive root cause analysis for all issues highlighted and to continue to work with all Suppliers to implement corrective and preventative action. The Inspector will be capable of undertaking thorough risk assessments of situation / product as they occur to minimize risk to Ornua at all times
The role will involve being present on site at supplier / packer / store locations to carry out quality checks to ensure that both bulk and finished packed product always meets Ornuas specification. The role involves regular site visits and travelling within Ireland and overseas, as required.
The Inspector will be required to drive and participate in continuous improvement projects with suppliers and packers and cross departmental teams. The role will involve completing and facilitating audits as required. This will also involve participating in the Supply Chain integrity project and auditing distributors and packers in-market as required. The role requires the incumbent to keep themselves abreast of any changes to legislation, as relevant, to ensure all Ornua ’s products and service providers meet legislative requirements.
The Technical Inspector will be expected to work closely with the Technical Team to resolve key issues and to provide cover for the Technical Manager as required.
The role involves maintaining close working relationships with Ornua’s Trading, Ingredient and Consumer Foods Divisions as well as warehouses, transport companies, manufacturers, subsidiaries and 3rd party suppliers and packers to the business to drive continuous improvement and corrective action.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
To work closely with Suppliers/ Packers to ensure all product procured by Ornua Co-op is at all times produced in a safe manner and meets the standards laid down by legislation, due diligence, market and customer requirements.
To apply quality and in particular sensory evaluation skills, to inspect and categorise correctly products purchased by Ornua.
To monitor closely Ornua stocks to ensure maximum quantity of stock is saleable at all times. To identify product for specific customers in line with their requirements and also re-classify or upgrade the quality of product to increase value where possible.
To drive resolution of customer issues and complaints when they arise, including undertaking visits to manufacturers/stores/packers/customers as necessary and ensuring timely resolution of issues.
To drive continuous improvement with Suppliers to Ornua through: Driving of root cause and resolution of all issues Management of stock Driving Corrective Action completion and verification Holding accountable those that do not meet minimum standards Preparing detailed Technical reports such as weekly result reviews and non-conformance reviews
To respond to customer technical questionnaires and other documentation as required. To ensure that Ornua procedures with regard to product specification, product inspection, storage and handling are followed at all times and to coordinate regular reviews and revisions of Ornua specifications. To provide technical information, so as to help with the creation of robust specifications that can be put in place with suppliers.
To facilitate customer inspection sessions and technical visits to manufacturing plants and packers, and to respond to customers’ requests for information and samples in a professional and timely manner.
To participate in the Supply Chain integrity project through: Auditing of in market distributors & packers. Working with in-market distributors and packers to implement continuous improvement and corrective action.
To participate in continuous improvement projects and new product launches as required and to audit as required of New Packers / Production sites.
To work closely with all internal teams to maintain safe and quality production / packing to ensure Ornua Co-op product meets all legislative, due diligence, market and customer requirement and to ensure that appropriate technical service levels are provided to the Ingredients and Consumer Foods Divisions.
To participate in the management FSMA/FSVP as a PCQI (Preventive Controls Qualified Individual). The US regulations require that certain activities be performed by a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual ( PCQI ) who has successfully completed training in the development and application of risk-based preventive controls. (As required)
To support the Technical Team and Manager as required.
To have a good working knowledge of legislation relevant to the manufacture, storage and handling of Ornua product categories, including monitoring of any changes to this legislation during audits to ensure that all Ornua products meet legislative and legal requirements.
To at all times represent the company to the highest level in all interactions with our members, suppliers and customers. To develop and maintain good relationships with Ornua suppliers, warehouses and 3rd party packers. To perform any other appropriate duties from time to time.
Key Requirements & Attributes: 5 years’ plus Technical/Quality Assurance experience, ideally dairy based, however other food or beverage experience may be considered . A third level qualification in a technical / food science discipline. Capability to learn sensory evaluation of dairy products. Strength of knowledge in the following areas would be a distinct advantage: Food Safety HACCP Microbiology Auditing Strong business results focus. Have the drive to achieve results in a friendly manner but at the same time maintain quality and standards. Enjoy challenging situations and a systematic and detailed approach to problems. A detailed approach towards task completion with decisive and timely decision making necessary.
