Responsibilities
PNNL is looking for a Cloud Engineer responsible for reviewing, analyzing, troubleshooting, implementing, and managing cloud-based and hybrid environments. The role includes working on core capabilities to help manage and run an environment with 100’s of accounts, projects, and subscriptions. You will have opportunities to embed with research projects that are utilizing cloud to change the world. We’re a lifetime learning institution and there will be ample opportunity to expand your skills working in a dynamic environment that heavily leverages automation. We support AWS, Azure, GCP, and government and classified versions of those environments.
What You Will Do:
Implement and manage cloud-based automation, infrastructure, and other tasks
Implement and enhance cloud-based systems in providers such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and GCP
Use your strong understanding of the underlying systems and technology to work independently on projects and assigned tasks
Potentially implement container-based (e.g., Kubernetes) and serverless (e.g., AWS Lambda) systems that integrate with traditional systems
Create deployment automation processes
Work in a DevOps environment
Participate in our scrum process, tracking your work in process, updating your tasks regularly, and peer validating the work of others, participate in weekly planning meetings and technical help sessions, ensuring you understand your work for the week
Develop code as needed to implement changes, enhance existing processes, and support customer requests.
Use Git effectively, track work in branches, submit pull requests for completed work and always maintain awareness of open branches to ensure clean merges and safe execution of changes
Continuously improve our services and create tutorials and videos that enable others.
Support Researchers:
Diagnose cloud and application performance issues and perform root-cause analysis.
Interact with engineers and researchers to build, troubleshoot, secure, and optimize their workloads.
Identify and implement optimal cloud-based solutions to meet customer requirements
Engage with clients via tickets, email, direct communication channels such as Teams, and periodic meetings.
Follow our ticket resolution process to ensure that researchers receive timely responses and correctly set their expectations.
Fully embed with their research teams, responsibility for the cloud engineering aspects of their environments.

We expect the following core skills that are necessary to support the objectives of this role:
Hands-on experience with at least one of Amazon Web Services (preferred), Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform and the ability to learn about all three.
Ability to read and write intermediate code.
Know at least one modern object-oriented programming language (Python preferred)
Degree in Information Science / Information Technology, Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent industry experience
Strong foundation in Core Cloud Services – Compute, Networking, Storage, Identity
Problem-solving skills and ability to work through ambiguity
Effective communication skills to lead technical discussions and engage with customers

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience -OR-
MS/MA -OR-
PhD
Preferred Qualifications:
Cloud:
One to two years of hands-on experience with at least one of Amazon Web Services (preferred), Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform and the ability to learn about all three.
Relevant certifications such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) Solutions Architect and a portfolio of work that demonstrates your role in designing, implementing, and managing cloud-based systems as required in this role.
Hands-on experience with additional non-core AWS, Azure, or GCP cloud services
Development:
Experience developing in Python and PowerShell / DevOps
Python Unit Testing and Test-Driven Development
Azure Functions, AWS Lambda, Cloudformation, Azure Automation
Hands-on experience in related IT skill sets:
Linux and Windows operating systems and containers
Managing or developing application stacks
Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence and Databricks
High Performance Computing
Network engineering
Cyber Security
Configuration management frameworks such as Ansible, Puppet, Terraform, or Chef
