The Royal Botanical Gardens is the largest botanical garden in Canada and one of the largest in the world. With over 2,700 acres of cultivated gardens and nature preserves it is also one of the biggest urban nature sanctuaries and marshland restoration sites in North America. We are seeking Student Gardeners to work in one of our seven horticultural areas: Hendrie Park, Laking Garden, Arboretum, Rock Garden, Mediterranean Plant and Cacti Collection Glasshouse/Visitor Centre Tropical Plant Display Atrium, Propagation Greenhouses, and RBG Main Centre for the spring & summer of 2022

Each Garden is unique in its diversity of plant material, featuring a wide range of aesthetically pleasing garden beds and an assortment of more scientifically oriented plant collections. Areas of specialty include: conifers and dwarf conifers, veggie village, healing garden, tropical plants, annuals and perennials, roses, native plants, Mediterranean Greenhouse, plant propagation, Arboretum (trees, shrubs and the renowned Lilac Collection).

Responsibilities:

• Planting of annuals, perennials, trees, and shrubs.
• Cultivating, mulching, raking, digging, garden clean-up watering and weeding.
• Deadheading and pruning of various plants.
• Turfgrass mowing using ride-on and walk-behind mowers, various 2-cycle gas and battery cell stringline trimmers, handheld and backpack blowers
• Operation of golf carts and John Deere gators.
• Overall contribution to a positive experience for RBG visitors.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

• These positions are available to students enrolled in post-secondary degree or diploma programs majoring in Horticulture, Landscape Design or Architecture, Environmental Science, Plant Biology, Landscape Technology, Parks Management, Nursery/Greenhouse Production, or a related field.
• Work experience in a related field and/or customer service experience is an asset.
• Interior Horticulture positions ( Mediterranean Plant and Cacti Collection Glasshouse/Visitor Centre Tropical Plant Display Atrium, Propagation Greenhouses) Must be available to work the occasional rotating weekend
• Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job including: bending, lifting utilizing hand tools and working in various weather conditions.
• Must be available from the end of April to end of August.
• Must provide own ankle-high, CSA approved footwear.
• A satisfactory Police Records Check will be required of the successful candidate, at their expense.
