Summary:
The Director of Continuous Improvement & Quality is responsible for coordination of a planned, systematic, institutional approach for identification, design, measurement, prioritization and monitoring of continuous improvement initiatives and achievement of key metric and quality outcomes for Rush University Medical Center. The Director has responsibility for monitoring and reporting compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards across the medical center. The Director establishes and implements standard performance improvement methodologies which are designed to elevate operational and clinical services and diminish opportunities for error. The Director develops departmental staff and institutional leaders to support organizational change and development. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.
Responsibilities:
• Provides a systematic approach to continuous improvement initiatives, and directs work of continuous improvement & quality department.
• Drives improvement through projects in alignment with organizational strategies and metrics, and ensures activities are prioritized, including standard intake, and project prioritization review process.
• Collaborates closely with leaders in Center for Quality Safety and Value, PMO, Strategy, Infection Prevention, and other areas to ensure collective coordination of work in accordance with strategy, and that resources are appropriately aligned.
• Communicates continuous improvement plans to assure integration with operations and evaluates effectiveness of plans.
• Supports and coaches operational and clinical leadership by promoting understanding of continuous improvement methodologies and tools, standard work, and evidence-based standards.
• Leads organization wide initiatives that align with continuous improvement plan.
• Promotes a flexible model for continuous improvement that aligns with RUMC.
• Promotes dissemination and understanding of information that is available about RUMC to relevant internal stakeholders.
• Evaluates new national standards, regulations and legislation, and promotes organizational understanding of impact and resulting improvement needs.
• Collaborates with leaders and staff across the medical center to exceed recognized industry standards for quality.
• Serves as primary contact for continuous improvement, and represents the institution to appropriate internal and external groups like University Health system Consortium, etc.
• Manages continuous improvement & quality department staff and provides coaching and mentoring for projects. Provides clear strategy to team and supports team in their professional development.
• Develops and monitors budget for continuous improvement & quality department.
• Demonstrates a continuous improvement mindset through a servant leadership style, including hands-on participation in projects to develop continuous improvement methodology skills.
• Collaborates with internal departments, including Center for Quality Safety and Value, to ensure timely and accurate availability of publicly reported quality information.
• Collaborates with internal departments for analytics to support and drive continuous improvement.
• Serves in a leadership role for regulatory and accreditation activities at RUMC.
• Manages process for review of quality issues arising from adverse events or near misses in the organization.
• Contributes to the educational mission as a member of Rush faculty.
Other information:
Required Job Qualifications:
• Masters degree in health care management or equivalent.
• Eight years of quality related experience in healthcare process improvement, hospital operations or healthcare consulting.
• At least three years experience leading a team with direct reports, in quality or continuous improvement department, or similar.
• Lean and/or Six sigma-trained black or green belt.
• Demonstrated strengths in Building Effective Working Relationships, Building and Developing Teams, Executive Presentation Skills, Driving Quality and Safety, and Driving Organizational Process Improvement.
• Established track record of strong Project Management and organizational skills.
