Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist II for the Public Health Research Institute within the New Jersey Medical School. Under the direction of the the Principal Investigator, the Research Teaching Specialist II conducts research activities in microbiology within a specialized biosafety level three (BSL3) containment laboratory as well as rodent infection experiments, assists in managing BSL3 laboratories. May be responsible for the management of a small-sized laboratory area. Assists the Principal Investigator with budgetary, training and administrative responsibilities.

Among the key duties of this position are the following;

• Cultures and quantitates pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria and viruses including M. Tuberculosis, select agents and Covid-19 requiring work in BSL3 facilities including drug resistant strains.

• Performs detailed MICs and DNA / RNA extraction of above described bacteria and viruses using various systems.

• Assists in the development and testing of new assays.

• Works safely in a BSL3 environment.

• Assists in managing BSL3 facilities.

• Responsible for organizing laboratory to increase efficiency.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

• A Master’s Degree in a relevant science plus two (2) years of related research experience, or a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant science plus three (3) years of related research experience.

• Experience in microbiological and bimolecular techniques with BSL2 and BSL3 bacterial pathogens.

• Experience working with virulent CDC classified tier 1 select agents and M. tuberculosis.
