THE OPPORTUNITY

This is an exciting opportunity to leverage your instructional design skills to help keep Albertans safe by contributing to the development of high quality educational programming for safety codes officers and safety system participants.

The Instructional Designer is responsible for applying contemporary, evidence-informed learning theories to the design, development, implementation, evaluation and maintenance of eLearning courses, code update training, workshops, webinars, podcasts and video that enables the Council to achieve its goal of providing organizational value to Albertans by building capacity across the safety codes system and, more specifically, by developing in clients and stakeholders the competencies needed to understand and effectively fulfill their responsibilities.

You are collaborative and creative with a keen eye for detail, bringing with you excellent knowledge of trends in the field of learning and development, eLearning development tools, assessment and evaluation model, methods and techniques.

Working alongside a talented team, you will be responsible for identifying, creating, and executing action plans to ensure the Council’s educational offerings meet the needs of clients and stakeholders across the safety codes system.

THE DETAILS

• Design, develop, and implement pedagogically sound course training materials that are ground in adult learning principles.
• Facilitate the DACUM process to define learning needs and reconcile these with documented competencies in collaboration with SMEs.
• Develop comprehensive instructional design plans that that reflect contemporary instructional methods and specify the media requirements, and assessment and evaluation methods.
• Create content, assessments, certification quizzes and exams that align with the specified learning objectives.

THE REQUIREMENTS

• Post-secondary university degree with a specialization in adult education, instructional design, educational technologies or curriculum preferred.
• Minimum 3 years’ experience working in the field of adult education and/or developing course curriculum.
• Experience with development of Articulate Storyline Projects or comparable e-Learning Software.
• Strong skills with Microsoft Office are required.
• Strong skills with Adobe Suite would be an asset.

• Office location is 10405 Jasper Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta.
• Hours of work: 36.25 hours per week (Monday – Friday).

About the Safety Codes Council

The (Council) is an independent regulatory body established in 1993 under the Act. The Council provides oversight of Alberta’s safety codes system through a number of key mandated functions including:

• Accrediting and monitoring the compliance of municipalities, agencies, corporations, and regional service commissions in administering the Act within specified jurisdictions.
• For the 300,000 Albertans who live in unaccredited areas of the province, the Alberta Safety
• Codes Authority (ASCA) conducts permitting, inspections and oversees spill and incident reporting requirements for storage tank systems across the province.
• Training and certifying safety codes officers to inspect the construction, installation and maintenance of Alberta’s structures and systems and administering Alberta’s Master Electrician program.
• Reviewing, formulating, safety codes and standards, and evaluating emerging issues in the safety codes system to provide recommendations to Alberta Municipal Affairs.
• Investigating complaints and conducting investigations on the conduct, performance, or competency of an organization or individual having authority, powers, or duties under the Act.
• Conducting hearings and appeals of orders and written notices issued under the authority of the Act.
