Position Summary
Under direction, collects water, soil, and other samples, conducts routine analysis of samples, maintains acceptable boiler water, cooling water and scrubber chemistry.
Working Conditions
Industrial environment with ability to exert a moderate degree of physical effort including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, walking and the assisted lifting of objects and materials up to 50 pounds. Ability to work in confined spaces and high areas with electrical hazards. Ability to work in confined spaces including, but not limited to: generators, transformers, breakers, tanks, wire vaults, scrubber modules, boiler, precipitator, vessels, etc. Ability to work in areas of excessive height including, but and not limited to 400-foot stack, 100-foot ball field lights, support structure beams, switchyard structures, manlifts, scrubber module structures, boiler structures, precipitator structures, vessel structures, etc. and to climb into those locations with the necessary tools and safety equipment. Frequently works in environment with loud and continuous noise. Exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, odors, humidity, temperature and noise extremes, wetness, strong or toxic agents or chemical, machinery and vibrations. Ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and depths. Specific vision abilities include close vision and distance vision with varied lighting. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator. Manual dexterity, ability to reach, bend, and use 2-step stool while safely lifting and lowering boxes. Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events. May be required to work after hours to include weekends and holidays.
Essential Functions
Collects and conducts routine analysis testing on boiler water demineralizer effluent and condensate polisher effluent.
Monitors the chemical feed to the cooling tower, boiler, lignite and scrubber/FGD and makes required adjustments to maintain chemical concentration within preset limits.
Understands feedwater, condensate, demineralizer, condensate polisher and boiler water system.
Tests lignite and determines BTU, moisture content, percent ash and percent sulfur.
Operates lignite analysis equipment including calorimeter, sulfur analyzer, balances, ovens and muffle furnace.
Sets up laboratory equipment and instrumentation required for tests, research or process control.
Performs tests on water samples, and performs soil analysis for mine permit area.
Performs analysis of mercury traps.
Compares and records test results in logbooks and on computer.
Cleans laboratory equipment and glassware.
Mixes ingredients make reagents or standards for laboratory use and plant processes.
Unloads chemical from transport trucks.
Handles bulk chemical packaged either in sacks or drums.
Performs mechanical maintenance on demineralizer, condensate polisher, condenser, storage tanks and cooling tower.
Processes maintenance requests.
Determines and takes appropriate actions and confers with supervisors.
Cross trains as needed to assist with Chemical Leadman duties in the event of absence.
Performs other duties, tasks and special projects as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
· High school diploma or equivalent
· Associate’s Degree preferred
· At least 1 years’ experience in power plant setting preferred
· At least 1 years’ experience in chemistry preferred
· Valid Driver License
· Grade D Water Certificate and License preferred
· Criminal background check
· Non DOT drug test
· Acceptable MVR
· Personal Computing
· Lockout/Tagout
