The job of a Save the Children’s UK Senior Education Adviser is exciting and leads on our education in emergencies work.

The Global Policy, Advocacy & Research (GPAR) department brings together Save the Children UK’s international policy, advocacy and research experts, influencing decision-makers to uphold the rights of the most deprived and marginalised children in low and middle-income countries. The department is split into teams, run by Heads, working as part of the global Save the Children movement on our strategic breakthrough priorities. Many members of the department contribute to the Multi-Disciplinary Teams working on our missions. Our GPAR staff generate research and evidence, thought leadership and policy analysis and plan, deliver and support advocacy strategies to ensure national governments, international multilateral bodies and the UK Government act on their obligations.

Job Purpose

Reporting directly to the Head of Education, you will be responsible for driving work on specific parts of the Save the Children strategy, with minimal supervision reflecting your high-level responsibilities, including representing the organisation regularly with external experts, donors and high-level decision-makers.

You will be a recognised expert in your field, providing leadership on complex assignments and projects, and providing technical guidance to others in resolving complex issues in a specialised area. You will produce very high-quality policy analysis and research and/or planning, delivery and evaluation of advocacy to influence duty-bearers to uphold the rights of children in low- and middle-income countries. You will also play an important role in sharing your expertise and providing valued guidance to colleagues.

Main Accountabilities

The Senior Education Adviser’s key duties will be to:

• Design, lead and deliver complex policy and advocacy strategies and products, to a high standard and with minimal supervision

• Identify global policy and research needs and influencing opportunities in your thematic area

• Maintain and develop very high-level knowledge and expertise in global education and advise colleagues across the global movement, including at a senior level, as well as senior external stakeholders

• Deepen and expand relationships with key high-level external experts, partners, donors and advocacy targets
• Represent the organisation externally including in high-level meetings and events and with donors and other key stakeholders

• Build strong relationships with our country programmes and other colleagues across our global movement to ensure that national-level advocacy is delivered and informs international debates and decision-makers

• Write advocacy briefings, reports, externally published articles and blogs, as well as assist in the drafting of press releases, Q&As and opinion pieces
• Contribute to the wider success of Save the Children’s teams in the UK and across our global movement, including our country offices and colleagues working on programmes, fundraising and communications, by providing policy, advocacy and/or research expertise as required

• Support the head of team and deputise as required

• Provide informal support to colleagues, for example through mentoring, coaching, training or guidance

• Undertake other tasks as required

Person Profile

• Very high-level expertise in global development policies, including national developing-country government policies, donor behaviour, international institutions and NGOs

• Very high-level knowledge and expertise in global education policy and advocacy.

• A proven track record of carrying out first-class research, policy and/or advocacy

• Ability to think creatively, innovate, strategize, set priorities, manage a workplan and evaluate progress with minimal supervision

• Strong networking and experience of participating in coalitions and working with civil-society actors to achieve change
• Very strong written and oral communication skills

• High-level knowledge of human rights, international relations, political analysis and the international humanitarian system

• Ability and willingness to travel up to six weeks a year

• Ability to operate within a predominantly self-servicing administrative environment

Ways of Working:

Remote First – The majority of our roles can be performed remotely, however you may work from the office as often as you wish. Whilst you will be predominantly working from home, we may require you to come to your contracted office up to 2-4 days per month or 6-8 days per quarter (Note: This will be agreed with your Line Manager and team) This is intended to be time spent on collaborating with colleagues and relationship building.

On-site – There are certain roles that cannot be performed remotely and so your role will be based in an office location and you may occasionally be able to work from home.

Flexible Working – We are happy to discuss flexible working options at interview.
