Summary:
The Cost Accountant is responsible for managing cost-related functions within the organization, ensuring accurate cost calculations, analysis, and reporting. This role involves working closely with cross-functional teams to gather cost data, perform cost analysis, and support financial decision-making. The Cost Accountant maintains cost records, prepares journal entries and account reconciliations, and contributes to month-end closing activities. They possess a strong understanding of GAAP accrual accounting and cost accounting principles, with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. The Cost Accountant is highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to work independently or collaboratively in a team environment. Effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential, along with the ability to thrive under pressure in a fast-paced setting.
Job Responsibilities:
Cost analysis: Conduct cost analysis, including the calculation of direct materials, labor, and overhead expenses, to determine product costs and assess cost efficiency.
Cost tracking: Monitor and track costs throughout the production process, ensuring accurate recording and allocation of expenses.
Journal entries and account reconciliations: Prepare journal entries and perform account reconciliations related to cost accounting to facilitate accurate financial reporting and month-end closings.
Commissions: Maintain sales managers’ commissions on Excel spreadsheets, ensuring accurate calculations and record-keeping.
GAAP accrual accounting: Apply a solid understanding of GAAP accrual accounting principles to ensure proper recognition and recording of costs and expenses.
Cost records management: Prepare cost-related financial reports, including WIP, cost of goods sold, cost variance analysis, gross margin and inventory valuation.
Financial reporting: Prepare comprehensive monthly reports on orders, revenue, purchases, and other relevant financial metrics to provide insights into business performance.
Collaboration: Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to gather cost data, support budgeting and forecasting activities, and provide cost-related insights and recommendations.
Process improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvement within cost accounting and contribute to the implementation of best practices to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Data analysis: Utilize analytical tools and techniques to analyze cost data, identify trends, and provide actionable insights for cost control and optimization.
Payroll backup: Provide backup support for payroll processing, ensuring accurate and timely payroll calculations, deductions, and disbursements.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (preferred).
Proven experience in cost accounting or a similar role.
Strong understanding of GAAP accrual accounting and cost accounting principles
Proficiency in financial analysis and cost calculation methodologies
Proficiency in accounting software. NetSuite experience a plus
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
Experience with general ledgers is a must
Requires excellent organizational and time management skills to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
High degree of accuracy and attention to detail
Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Compensation and Benefits:
Salary Range: $70,000 – $80,000
