They are paid for from a variety of sources, including the Smithsonian endowment, revenue from our business activities, donations, grants and contracts. The salary ranges for trust positions are generally the same as for federal positions and in many cases trust and federal employees work side by side. OVERVIEW The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art seeks to recruit a Junior Web Developer.
The National Museum of Asian Art, located on the National Mall in Washington, DC, preserves, exhibits, and interprets Asian art in ways that deepen our understanding of Asia, America, and the world.
The museum cares for exceptional collections of Asian art, with more than 45,000 objects dating from the Neolithic period to today and originating from the ancient Near East to China, Japan, Korea, South and Southeast Asia, and the Islamic world. Nearly a century old, the Freer Gallery of Art also holds a significant group of American works of art largely dating to the late 19th century. It houses the world’s largest collection of diverse works by James McNeill Whistler, including the famed Peacock Room.
This junior position is responsible for assisting the Senior Web Developer with the development, management and maintenance of the museum’s various web-based applications, including the main museum website, intranet, and in-gallery interactive kiosks.
The successful candidate will be dependable with a willingness to learn and constantly develop their skills on the job, experienced with direct client interactions, and able to work well both individually and as part of a team.
They will have some experience with developing for WordPress.
A demonstrated interest in the arts, education, and/or museums is a plus.
This position has the potential for telework.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Web Development Support Investigates and assists with the implementation of new web technologies for use for and by museum staff. Assists with the development and maintenance of existing web applications using PHP to collect, manage, and provide access to data stored in SQL based databases and XML structured documents. Works with museum’s internal team to create WordPress templates matching industry standards using XHTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Maintains up-to-date documentation on all web projects. Provides expertise, coordination, and development of web applications to support the day-to-day work of the museum. With the members of the web team and other staff, oversees, coordinates, communicates and facilitates all museum web projects, presentations, and applications. Provides schedule assessment for completion of a web project from a technical standpoint.
Technical Evaluation Performs technical evaluation and provides product reviews and analysis of various operational software tools in support of web application development. Stays current with the direction of SI central web-related strategy and projects. Provides technical guidance to other team members who are generating web content and design as appropriate. Assists in preparation and management of web-related contracted projects or applications. Helps team members and other museum staff to identify and fully utilize the web tools and solutions best suited to different projects and presentations.
Supports related security testing, usability enhancements, search engine optimization, dynamic web-to-database applications, integration protocols, and innovative Web applications.
Security Assists in the development of system security plans and procedures for the web servers to ensure compliance with SI requirements as appropriate. Monitors the system for security breaches. Monitors the network news services for announcements of potential security problems. Takes appropriate action to avoid a security breach at all times. Performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Required: 1-2 years experience in web development Working knowledge of web languages/technologies including but not limited to: HTML; Javascript/JQuery; CSS; PHP/MySQL WordPress plugins and themes customization/development Custom API integration Speed optimization GitHub Ability to evaluate new services and technologies Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred: Familiarity with Sass/CSS pre-processors; front end frameworks Knowledge and understanding of museum-specific issues, including image quality control, content validity, copyright protection, audience accessibility, and educational goals, a plus.
