Applications are invited for a 0.8 WTE Locum Consultant Paediatrician to work within the Paediatric Outpatient Department at St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals.
The Paediatric Department has seen an unprecedented increase in referrals since the Covid 19 Pandemic with demand far outstripping the current outpatient clinic capacity. This is a part-time, fixed term post (8PA) is specifically designed to support outpatient activity with no on-call or acute paediatric work. The person appointed will be supported by and work closely with consultant colleagues and department managers.
The post-holder will be expected to provide 3 outpatient clinics per week based in the Children & Young People’s OPD at Whiston Hospital, plus 2 outpatient clinics per week based at Lowe House Community Hub in St Helens (Wednesday AM & PM).
Clinics must be cancelled at least 6 weeks in advance to allow sufficient time to notify patients and re-schedule appointments. If a clinic is to be cancelled at less than 6 weeks’ notice, this must be approved by the Department’s Directorate Manager in advance of the cancellation except in emergency situations. Morning clinics commence at 9.00 am and afternoon clinics commence at 1.30 pm.
The Trust provides a full range of acute inpatient, outpatient, day case and emergency services to local communities of St Helens, Knowsley, parts of Halton and Liverpool. The Regional Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit also extends its services to the whole of Cheshire, Merseyside, North Wales and the Isle of Man.

Audit, Education and Research
All medical staff are expected to undertake Continuing Medical Education (CME) to maintain standards.
The post holder must participate in annual job planning with the Clinical Director and Directorate Manager.
All consultant and non-training grade doctors in the Trust must have an annual appraisal. The Trust has developed a standardised, strengthened medical appraisal process to ensure it meets the required standards of Medical Revalidation and supports doctors in their revalidation. The post holder will be assigned an appraiser and an appraisal anniversary month by the Medical Revalidation Team. Appraisals must take place by the last date of the anniversary month each year. Permanent members of staff will have their appraisal on the Trust e-portfolio system (‘PReP’).
