Job Description
The Workplace Safety Representative (WSR), also known as a Construction Safety Officer, performs and completes a variety of professional assignments involving the review, investigation, and analysis of workplace operations, environment, tools, equipment, and processes in a broad range of construction workplaces to ensure the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Act (MIOSH Act) and other workplace safety rules and regulations are appropriately adhered to providing a safe and healthy work environment for Michigan workers. Performs work through application of knowledge, practices, rules, policies and regulations related to industry standards to minimize potential safety and health risks in the workplace.
Work Site (Coverage Area): Gogebic, Ontonagon, Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga, Iron, Dickinson, Marquette, Menominee, Alger, Delta, Schoolcraft, Luce, Chippewa, Mackinac, Emmet, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Otsego, Montmorency, Presque Isle, Alpena, Antrim, Grand Traverse, Benzie, and Leelanau Counties.
Work Location (Home Office): The WSR works from a home office (that is, their home), which is the official workstation for this position, rather than a State office building.
Candidate must possess a valid driver’s license. The Workplace Safety Representative is issued a state vehicle, which must be parked overnight in a secure location in the county to which the position is assigned. Examples of a secure location are the employee’s home (if they reside in Dickinson, Marquette, Menominee, Alger, Delta, Schoolcraft, Luce, Chippewa, Mackinac, excluding Mackinac Island, Emmet, Charlevoix, Antrim, or Grand Traverse County ) and the parking lot of any governmental facility.

Workplace Safety Representative 12
Three years of professional experience conducting workplace safety investigations and analysis equivalent to a Workplace Safety Representative 9, including two years equivalent to a Workplace Safety Representative 10 or one year equivalent to a Workplace Safety Representative P11.
Preferred: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Occupational Safety, Industrial Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health, or Industrial Hygiene; OR a Bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field and occupational safety and health experience where responsibilities involve the interpretation and application of safety and health standards, or safety and health regulations or equivalent.
Possession of a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation is desirable.

Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school, AND 1) Two years of experience investigating/inspecting industrial plants for compliance with occupational safety standards or, 2) Two years of responsibility for workplace safety in a general industry environment, or, 3) Six years of experience in continuous heavy commercial or industrial construction, two years of which shall have been as a journey level skilled trade worker. Completion of a construction skilled trade apprenticeship program can be substituted for two of the six years of experience as a journey level skilled trade worker.
Workplace Safety Representative 12
Educational level typically acquired through the completion of high school, AND 1) Three years of experience investigating/inspecting industrial plants for compliance with occupational safety standards, or 2) Three years of responsibility for workplace safety in a general industry environment, OR 3) Seven years of experience in continuous heavy commercial or industrial construction or three years of which shall have been a journey level skilled trade worker. Completion of a construction skilled trade apprenticeship program can be substituted for two of the seven years of experience as a journey level skilled trade worker.

Special Requirements, Licenses, and Certifications
This position requires an annual audiometric test. Some positions may include the mandatory use of a respirator, which requires an annual physical to ensure the ability to perform the duties of this position. In addition, some positions may require candidates to pass a hyperbaric tunnel physical as a portion of the interview process in order to ensure the ability to perform investigations in a pressurized tunnel.

Leave Time
Full-time employees receive between 15 and 35 vacation days per year. Employees also receive 13 sick days per year and 8 hours of leave to participate in certain school functions or community activities. Employees may also qualify for up to 12 weeks of paid or unpaid leave for certain family or medical situations.
Holidays
State employees receive 12 or 13 scheduled paid holidays each year, including New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day.

Insurance and Other Benefits
Eligible employees can choose from a variety of health insurance plans, including a PPO, HMOs, and a High Deductible Health Plan with HSA (effective January 1, 2021). Employees also have the option to purchase additional life, accidental death, and long-term care insurance, auto/home insurance, identify theft protection, and legal services.
Paid Parental Leave
Provides eligible individuals up to 12 weeks of paid leave immediately following birth or adoption of a child.
Deferred Compensation
Employees may invest income in a tax-deferred retirement investment program. The state offers two optional deferred compensation plans, the 457 and 401(k). Employees decide the amount deducted from their paychecks.
Retirement
Employees receive a minimum 4% state contribution toward their retirement fund. If an employee elects to contribute more, the state will match up to 3%. The Office of Retirement Services administers two different retirement plans for State of Michigan employees: Defined Benefit (DB) (https://www.michigan.gov/orsstatedb) and Defined Contribution (DC) (https://www.michigan.gov/orsstatedc) . New hires can also receive up to a 2% employer match into a Personal Healthcare Fund and a lump-sum credit to a tax-deferred account if eligible.
