Job Summary
This position exists to provide expert engineering and technical decisions in the review, analysis, development and administration of statewide air quality protection regulations and programs. The principal engineer provides direction and technical advice to professional engineers and technical staff in the air program to ensure work conforms to the engineering standards and policies set forth by the Agency.
The incumbent will conduct engineering review including cost estimates, evaluation, analysis, and managing projects.
Additionally, this position conducts or participates in the development of special studies, investigations in assigned engineering area to determine current and long range needs and to recommend alternative courses of action in problem areas.
This position also will organize and lead multi-functional work teams and requires excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
Minimum Qualifications
A Master’s degree in environmental health, risk assessment, toxicology, or the natural sciences and two (2) years professional experience in analyzing environmental data, the fate and transport of environmental contaminants, applying risk assessment principles, the fundamentals of air toxics impacts, and developing conclusions and recommendations.

A Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, risk assessment, toxicology, or the natural sciences and three (3) years of professional experience in analyzing environmental data, the fate and transport of environmental contaminants, applying risk assessment principles, the fundamentals of air toxics impacts, and developing conclusions and recommendations.
The incumbent must also have strong communication skills sufficient to educate staff of the new air toxics rules and provide technical leadership to staff teams made up of varied backgrounds. The incumbent must possess diverse technical knowledge, social skills, and leadership abilities.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience with data management and statistical analysis
Knowledge of and experience with database and data processing software such as SQL
Experience with statistical or scripting languages such as R or Python
Physical Requirements
Requires occasionally lifting and/or carrying such as articles as file folders, ledgers, and small equipment. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting, a certain amount of wlaking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties.
Additional Requirements
Position duties may require travel but driving is not a minimum qualification or essential function of this position. Employees who may drive for state business will need their driver’s license checked prior to operating a state vehicle.
