Job Class: Trainee – Weights & Measures Investigator
Working Title: Inspector 1 (Heavy Duty – Livestock Scale Inspector)
**The trainee position will last for 3-6 months with a salary of $21.28/hr. After successful completion of training, posted salary for position above is assigned.
To enforce the state mandated quality standards described in Minnesota Chapter 239, and Minnesota Code of Agency Rules 7601 as they apply to livestock scales and industrial scales generally having capacities in excess of 2,000 lbs. This position work area includes testing industrial scale in the 7 county metro area and the livestock scale across the state, and will include approximately 3 months of tavel each year. Daily duties will consist of carrying out inspections and performance-based testing on scales which can be physically demanding and may include repeative bending, lifting, and carrying of 50 lbs. loads and will be conducted outdoors, in all weather conditions, year-round.
Training will be in the Weights and Measures office in Burnsville but will quickly transition to field training with experienced investigators throughout the state. Travel will be required during the training period. Successfully passing training will involve passing both written and field exams on NIST Handbook 44 and state weights & measures law, as well as demonstrating the ability to safely and correctly perform field evaluations.
High school diploma or GED
Valid Class B driver’s license with airbrake endorsement
Math skills (whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios & use of geometric formulas) sufficient to understand and solve basic volumetric equations and correctly apply measurement methods. (to be verified with a test at first interview)
Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook)
College or technical coursework in Mathematics or Science
Mechanical Experience (i.e. vehicle maintenance), especially diesel trucks and generators
Knowledge of NIST Handbook 44, MN Statute 239, Department of Commerce Rules 7601 and 7602 as they relate to weighing and measuring equipment
Experience in any aspect of the scale industry (especially livestock and industrial scales)
Experience in working a route (delivery, sales, etc.)
Job involves frequently lifting (50 lb test weights) and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file boxes, moving 500 lb. test weights with a 2-wheel cart, and loading 1000 lb test weights on and off carts using an electronic hoist. Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.
