Studio.init() Looking for Software Engineer (Full-Stack, Mobile, Web) at New York City Metropolitan Area Full Time

Who We Are

Studio.init() is a team of seasoned Eng/UX/UXR experts with backgrounds at Startups, Google, Apple, Amazon, and Coinbase. Although we’re fairly new, we’re a tight group who have worked together for over five years at Google. We’re super legit, as we were featured in both Wired and Business Insider.

We aim to help startups and enterprises establish a strong foundation and scale software products to new heights. We offer research, design, and engineering services, and our user-centric approach and deep understanding of the latest technologies transform their digital product visions from concept to reality. 

We also don’t offshore our work as an agency. We are a local, USA-based (San Francisco and NYC metro) team that does the work ourselves. Our Engineering team is located in the New York City Metropolitan Area. Our UX Design team is located in San Francisco. Both teams operate in a hybrid office environment.

Role Description

Are you a generalist software developer who loves diving into challenges? Are you energized to learn new things and thrive in ambiguity? If so, this role is for you!

We’re looking for a junior or mid-level software engineer – not someone senior with, say, ten years of experience. We’re looking for someone earlier in their career who is hungry to learn, perform, and improve.

You’ll work alongside our senior-staff team of doers who developed their careers at startups and big tech. It’s a great opportunity to become a better and stronger engineer.

You should be highly driven and self-motivated. You should be comfortable asking for help, but don’t expect us to do the work for you. You’ll be expected to manage your tasks (we SCRUM) and contribute meaningfully to projects. You’ll work sometimes on solo projects or be part of a small team (it varies).

We function like a startup and work with many startups, so the pace is energetic and fun. If you like producing, this is a perfect opportunity to excel. This might not be for you if you like to take slow, methodical, and deep thoughts about design and implementation. 

We take on a variety of fun and challenging projects. We enjoy going outside our comfort zone to learn and improve. We strive for high-quality work, and our clients accept nothing but excellence.

You’ll be expected to work on front-end, back-end, mobile, and whatever might need to be done. Day-to-day tasks will include writing and testing code, identifying and fixing bugs, collaborating with our cross-functional teams, planning tasks, and participating in code reviews.

This is a contract, hybrid role with the potential to become full-time. The role could be in Northern New Jersey, Hoboken, or New York City. We are NOT considering fully remote. Frankly, we’ve tried that, and it just doesn’t work. We want to create a strong culture of collaboration, and in our experience, remote work doesn’t cut it. Expect to be reporting to an office several times a week.

Our Typical Tech Stacks

• iOS: Swift, Swift UI (some Objective-c)
• Android: Kotlin
• Web: Next.js with TypeScript
• Backend: Node.js or Java, on AWS
• Cross-platform: Flutter (some React Native)

Qualifications

• You must have existing programming experience. At least one or two years of development experience in Javascript, Java, Swift, Python, etc. We are not able to teach you programming or engineering. But we can help you learn new languages and sharpen your skills.
• Knowledge of AWS, GCP, or other Cloud platforms is preferred but not required.
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Experience with agile development methodologies (we SCRUM).
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently and in a team environment.
• Bachelor’s in Computer Science or equivalent. Boot camp does not count.
• Must be legally able to work in the USA. We cannot sponsor a visa or similar.

Compensation

• $50-75 per hour, based on experience. (We cannot go higher; there are no exceptions.)
• WeWork or Regus membership to work alongside us.
• Stickers and t-shirts from time to time.

Interview Expectations

• Two 45-minute coding and design sessions.
• Coding focuses on algorithms and data structures and how well you solve problems.
• Design is focused on solving problems and examining trade-offs. Expectation is at an L2 or L3 SWE level.
• Two 45-minute general interviews.
• We’ll focus on your ability to work in a team, build products, and think creatively.
• We’ll also be determining if you’re a good culture fit.
