What can you expect?
A Duty Forecaster works to effect avalanche mitigations in accordance with the overall avalanche control program and forecasts for avalanche hazard within the operational boundary of the ski area. The role also communicates information, maintains equipment, and performs additional tasks in the Public Safety environment. Duty Forecasters report to the Lead Avalanche Forecaster and Public Safety Director. Duty forecasters work with the Snow Safety and Ski Patrol teams to direct mentoring and optimize Snow Safety training for the Public Safety team.

The primary responsibility of this role is to maintain all terrain within the Ski Area boundary in a safe manner and to provide comprehensive avalanche control when required. Duty Forecasters will work with and direct technicians and other Public Safety staff to open avalanche terrain in a timely fashion, complete daily duties pertaining to safety, and provide a safe and friendly environment for all guests.
Lead team meetings for the daily avalanche hazard forecast and oversee the daily avalanche control operations.
Oversee daily avalanche control operations.
Lead avalanche control routes to mitigate avalanche hazard in the resort.
Complete a resort wide terrain run list to define daily conditions for entering avalanche terrain in the resort.
Collect pertinent data including weather, snowpack, and avalanche observations.
Maintain and establish appropriate signage and closures to prevent access to closed Avalanche terrain.
Mitigate risk through daily risk assessments, control measures, and accident investigations.
Provide first aid and participate in lift evacuations, and other Ski Patrol tasks.
Maintain a cheerful and courteous relationship with the skiing public.
Administrative and Reporting Responsibilities
Timely completion of documentation of avalanche data: weather, snowpack and avalanche observations and explosives use.
Maintain magazine inventories and complete daily magazine checks.
Assist with inventory and maintenance of all equipment that pertains to the avalanche control program.
Timely and accurate reporting of all incidents and deficiencies to appropriate departments/personnel.
Collaborate with and assist the Public Safety Director, Mountain Operations Manager, and other department supervisors.
Other duties may be requested and assigned from time to time.
And you have:
5+ years ski industry experience – Snow Safety, Ski Patrol, Mechanized Ski Operations
Canadian Avalanche Association Operations Level 2.
Canadian Avalanche Association Professional or Active Member (desired).
Alberta Avalanche Control Blaster’s Permit (desired).
InfoEx Contributor and/or Moderator experience.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
Ability to safely navigate complex avalanche terrain in poor weather conditions.
Advanced Wilderness First Aid/EMR/90 hour
Valid Alberta Motor Vehicle Driver’s License.
Neat, alert, punctual and dependable, acting as a leader and mentor.
Excellent customer service skills, especially in high stress environments.
Effectively provide training, support, and assistance to colleagues across all departments.
Maintain professional conduct when knowingly acting as a company representative, on or off-duty.
Reliability to work in a confidential capacity.
Prepared to work flexible schedules: weekends, holidays, nights, extended hours.
