The Lead Electrical Technician manages day-to-day work flow within a group or unit; the Lead Electrical Technician will provide feedback to the supervisor and/or manager on work related issues. The role is multi-skilled requiring a high degree of competency in electrical skills with basic mechanical skills. The role involves diverse electrical and mechanical work on rail cars and other vehicles. The primary role is to conduct modifications and repairs to passenger rail cars and locomotives along with the installation of new electrical and electronic systems. The role includes responsibilities for Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) inspections as assigned and the maintenance of documentation for the vehicles and the work site. The ability to operate aerial lifts and fork truck is desirable.
Responsibilities and Accountabilities
Make assignments and distribute day-to-day work flow within an assigned group
Electrical installation: The installation of new systems onto rail and road passenger vehicles including cabling installation, system component fitting and system testing
Electrical repairs: The rewiring of rail cars which have been involved in collisions and fires including the installation of conduit, the running and crimping of cables at terminal boxes. Full testing of reinstalled electrical circuits using the standard electrical test tools including, megger, multi-meters and hi-pots
Electrical fault finding: The troubleshooting of electrical defects using the standard electrical test tools
Mechanical: Assist with mechanical disassembly/assembly of passenger rail car interior panels and general interior fittings, flooring, plumbing, seats and trim
Environmental Health and Safety: Perform EHS duties as assigned
Documentation: Maintains vehicle history books and other production documentation
Educational Requirements:
Technical Trade School completion or 5 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience (Essential Functions)
Minimum of 5 years in Rail or related industry
Working Conditions (Industrial/Environmental)
Heavy industrial environment. Crane movement, forklift traffic, occasional work at heights, hot works and metal fabrication, work in pits and under cars on jack stands
Physical/Mental Requirements
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and be able to work in a fast-paced environment.
