Functions of the HSNO Komiti
The Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act 1996 manages the risks of using and introducing hazardous substances and new organisms in or into New Zealand. The Ngāi Tahu HSNO Komiti reviews and considers all relevant new applications and reassessments.

Purpose of the role
The purpose of this role is to represent the Ngāi Tahu perspective to the HSNO Komiti ensuring that any issues of tribal significance are reported to Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu while also ensuring that tribal matters of significance are represented to the Komiti.

Required skills, experience and qualifications

• An understanding and knowledge of mahinga kai practice and species.
• Familiarity with Ngāi Tahu tikanga and Ngāi Tahu tribal policy regarding the introduction, use or research into hazardous substances and new organisms.
• Familiarity with legislation and government processes relevant to the work of the HSNO Komiti.
• Familiarity with research principles, ethics and methodologies generally.
• Familiarity with human health, medicinal, pharmaceutical, and/or nutraceutical issues and research.
• Networks with whānau, industry, and/or government relevant to the issues before the HSNO Komiti.
• Experience and expertise in the broad area of Genetic Modification, Hazardous Substances and introduction of new organisms.
• Be open-minded and adopt a fair and transparent approach to the work of the Komiti.

Meeting details
Four meetings a year usually held in Christchurch.

Remuneration of $750 for full Komiti Members and $375 for Associate Members per meeting plus reasonable travel and accommodation expenses.
