About you

As an Emerging Technology Specialist, you add great value by assisting your team in exploring, validating, and ultimately commercialising new technologies that enhance Telstra’s products and competitive advantage. You thrive on being part of high functioning and motivated team, using your software engineering skills to allow Telstra to build on its reputation as a globally innovative Tech company and deliver great customer experiences.

This role will work within the Product Excellence & Incubation group of Product & Technology, developing prototypes and demonstrators of new product concepts in areas related to 5G, IoT, AR/VR, AI/ML and Edge, to explore and validate these with customers and in the field.

Key Responsibilities:

• Take ownership of assigned work tasks, and leverage your knowledge and practical experience of software engineering to create high quality output quickly and efficiently within agreed delivery timeframes
• Apply your critical thinking and problem-solving abilities to help evaluate and resolve key impediments to the evolution of the technology product portfolio
• Support team members to perform analysis, specification, and the design of emerging and advanced technologies
• Participate in continuous improvement initiatives within your team to help Telstra deliver great customer experiences
• Collaborate with team members to provide support in the design of innovative product roadmaps to create competitive differentiation, growth, cost savings, and customer service improvements
• Participate in conduct of experiments and incubation of new technologies (through prototyping and experimentation), and apply your sound communication skills to present improvement opportunities with the support of senior team members
• Continue to build your knowledge of best practice industry trends through active thought leadership, and contribute specific product, segment, or domain expertise to enable the team to continuously improve product performance
• Apply Agile practices and mindsets when working in Agile teams or within Telstra’s Agile operating model

To be successful in the role, you’ll have:

• Proven and demonstrable competency in software engineering
• Ability to use Javascript language, libraries and frameworks for web application development
• Ability to effectively use unit tests and unit testing frameworks as part of a development pipeline
• Ability to leverage public cloud platform features and architect software for cloud deployment, particularly on Azure

Nice to haves:

• Cyber Security and Secure Code experience
• Ability to develop native apps for Android or iOS devices
• Ability to design and deploy a software application using Kubernetes
• Ability to work with hardware e.g. Raspberry Pi
• Additional programming language experience e.g. Python, Go, C, C#

Preference is for Melbourne based candidate but would consider flexibility for outside Melbourne candidates.
