Job Description
The Research Associate performs independent research activities requiring an advanced level of knowledge in a field of science or learning, are predominantly intellectual and varied in character, and require consistent use of discretion and judgment. This position supports research in the Plant Breeding program at Uvalde.
Job Duties:
Plans and manages crossing block.
Develops breeding populations.
Plans multi-location phenotypic trials.
Collect field data and maintain database
Analyzes multi-environment trial data using relevant statistical software.
Isolates bacteria and fungi. Extracts DNA from plant tissues, bacteria, and fungi. PCR
Identifies bacteria and fungi using genomics and bioinformatics.
Screens germplasm for biotic and abiotic stresses.
Manages the Plant Breeding Genomics lab by operating, maintaining, and repairing BMG FLUOstar Omega, Flow Cytometry, and other laboratory equipment used in analysis.
Keeps detailed records of lab procedures. Procures and maintains an adequate stock of supplies.
Promptly recognizes and corrects operating issues.
Works with manufacturers and vendors in the event of equipment failure to troubleshoot problems swiftly.
Utilizes computers to process large quantities of genomic data using R and BASH scripts.
Attracts/assists in grants and contracts to support the Vegetable Breeding program.
May publish work in peer-reviewed journals.
Mentors graduate students in research and training.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.
Two years of related professional experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Understanding of the genetics and breeding principles of open-pollinated vegetable crops.
Proficient in the breeding program’s data management, multi-environment trial data analysis, Quantitative Trait Loci and Association mapping software, and have software programming knowledge.
Knowledge and experience with genotyping with molecular markers and troubleshooting laboratory equipment.
Strong organizational skills, excellent communication, and report-writing skills.
Ability to work individually and by interacting with other research teams within the center. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
