DESCRIPTIONS OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Information Technology Division of the Houston Airport System (HAS) provides technology systems and information that enhances the passenger experience and empowers the Houston Airports to meet its mission and vision.
The IT Professional – Applications (SQL/ETL Developer) position builds data integration solutions using SQL, SSIS, ETL/ELT, AWS based cloud technologies (Lambda, Glue, etc.). This position supports and contributes to day-to-day data development and administration for HAS Digital Airport Platform and data architectures/integrations within HAS and provides customer support and technical issue resolution. The IT Professional – Applications investigates data errors/variances and derives solutions independently with appropriate follow-up monitoring, makes recommendations for optimal data extraction, manipulation, and integration methodologies based upon research and analysis and develops high-complexity integrated data sets to support analysis, data science, operation improvement, and decision support activities. The IT Professional – Applications becomes an expert and thought leader in HAS Digital Airport Platform and performs validation and ensures quality standards for high-complexity data sets created by fellow team members. This position works closely with data analysts, data engineers and vendors to understand and provide feedback on complex functional requirements, identifies gaps and technical limitations, proposes solutions and workarounds and formalizes solutions in technical design documents, followed by coding unit and regression testing. This position provides support for existing data interfaces, APIs and the development of outbound/bidirectional interfaces and data integration solutions and completes required implementation and validation checklists and documentation for new interfaces and upgrades. “Must be able to pass a criminal background check, obtain and maintain federally mandated security clearances where required.”
The IT Professional – Applications duties include but are not limited to:
SYSTEMS ANALYSIS & PROGRAMMING: Under general direction, formulates and defines system scope and objectives based on user needs. Develops and tests moderately complex applications by applying knowledge of programming or database techniques and computer systems. Devises or modifies procedures to solve moderately complex problems considering computer equipment capacity and limitations, operating time, and form of desired results. Prepares detailed specifications from which programs will be written. Analyzes and revises existing system logic difficulties and documentation as necessary. Ensures effectiveness of applications by performing preventive maintenance work; applies patches; performs upgrades.
CUSTOMER SERVICE: Provides technical assistance on moderately complex software issues. Serves as tier 2 support to resolve end-users problems. Evaluates user’s requests for new or modified application features. Determines feasibility, cost and time required, compatibility with current system and computer capabilities.
ADMINISTRATION: Prepares technical support documentation to describe application development, configuration, logic, coding and corrections. Reads manuals, periodicals, and technical reports to learn ways to develop programs that meet user requirements.
TEAM EFFORT: Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results and performing related responsibilities as needed.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. Operates a motor vehicle. There are no major sources of discomfort, i.e., essentially normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature and air conditions. Significant time spent using computer display, keyboard, and mouse. Requires the ability to make closely coordinated eye/hand movements within very fine tolerance and/or calibration demands.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management and Information Systems (MIS) or a closely related field.
Information systems-specific technical certifications may be substituted for 1 year of either the education or the experience requirement, as applicable.
Related professional Information Systems experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
At least five (5) years of technology experience supporting IT applications.
A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Management and Information Systems (MIS) or a closely related field may be substituted for two years of the experience requirement.

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
Preferences will be given to applicants with the following skillsets:
High technical proficiency in SQL, ETL/ELT, knowledge in Data modelling, Data Warehouse/Data Lake.
Other programming languages used in data science (such as Python) is preferred, but experience in other programming languages may be considered.
Microsoft Office products (particularly Excel).
Data visualization tools (such as Tableau, Quicksight, or PowerBI).
API integration applications such as Mulesoft.
Problem-solving; Creative problem diagnosis and solving.

Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate’s qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
