DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Houston Public Library (HPL) is seeking energetic, flexible, team-oriented people with a passion for customer service to work as a Librarian II (Metadata). Under the direction of the Librarian III (Metadata), the Metadata Librarian II will work within the Digitization Unit team and collaborate closely with History Research Center archivists, librarians, and curators to ensure good adherence to an established digitization project workflow as it relates to the facilitation of quality metadata for digital archival collections. The Metadata Librarian II will also lend support to other Digital Strategies teams as needed.
The Librarian II (Metadata) duties will include:
Partner with Digitization Unit teammates and History Research Centers to ensure smooth workflow for digital archival metadata creation and collection upload and management
Acts as a metadata consultant to History Research Centers, especially in key areas of established project workflow, including during new project setup and review of completed projects before upload into content management system
Works on HPL-specific metadata standards and assists in development and implementation of best practices, tools, procedures, and workflows
Trains employees, contractors, and volunteers on metadata creation and remediation
Provides support for Special Projects, including ad hoc metadata creation for HPL Digital Archival collections, including legacy Digital Archival collections
Uses detail-oriented nature and experience with using standards to facilitate improvement and efficiency of the use of batch transcription service for audiovisual materials that adheres to ADA guidelines
Uses designated software to assist with creation of transcripts for audiovisual collections
Trains under supervisor to organize and ensure safe, quality storage of digital archival materials
Assists Division Manager and Librarian III (Metadata) with department-critical work that supports the Houston Public Library Digital Archives (HPLDA) online platforms and collections
Participates in planning and coordination of metadata enhancement and remediation to address better discovery for library users
Prepares statistical and narrative reports for presentation
Participates in the allocation of assigned budget and monitors expenditures
Participates in grants processes that involve digital archives, preparing and maintaining necessary grant and project documentation
Conducts routine maintenance of HPLDA website, and visits the two (2) off-site History Research Center libraries monthly
Assists direct supervisor with responsibilities related to grant, CIP, and other outside funded equipment purchases made by or on behalf of the Department, including research, equipment setup, documentation, training, and maintenance of equipment
Actively participates in evaluations and working groups associated with digital archival platforms like the HPL Digital Archive (HPLDA) website
Possess a strong working knowledge of Microsoft operating system and software. Knowledge of other Internet software and media applications, digital technologies, iOS, and other software as needed
Plans ongoing development, user testing, thoughtful increase of integration points, and analysis of HPL’s digital archives discovery points in a methodical, organized, and phased approach
Provides communication to archives staff on use and enhanced functionality of digital archive content management and discovery systems
This individual will need to be available to handle emergency calls to provide after-hours assistance for critical issues

WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires stooping and bending; lifting of library materials up to 20 pounds. Must be able to move freely throughout the library to file/retrieve library materials. Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Master of Library Science degree from a school accredited by American Library Association (ALA) and one year of experience as a librarian, OR requires a Bachelor’s degree plus 18 hours toward a Master of Library Science degree from a school accredited by ALA and two years of professional library experience. A Master of Library Science degree must be completed within two years from being hired into this classification.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
One year of professional library experience with ALA accredited Master of Library Science, or 2 years of professional library experience with 18 hours towards Master of Library Science degree.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
A valid Driver’s License and compliance with the City of Houston policy on driving (AP 2-2) preferred.

Ability to plan and organize work and skilled at prioritization
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with others;
Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds;
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
Experience using digital content management platforms such as CONTENTdm;
Familiarity with current metadata standards and practices, including XML and Dublin Core;
Experience with EBSCO Stacks or similar webpage editing using web-based tools.
Experience with transcriptions software such as Sonix
Knowledge of current versions of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
