Report for America is a dynamic, rapidly-growing answer to America’s crisis in local news reporting. Some 300 corps members work at newspapers large and small, public radio stations, TV stations, digital publications, wire services and investigative nonprofits. This year they will be in 250 newsrooms across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., plus Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Data and Information Manager plays a significant role in the organization. This person is charged with creating and managing critical processes and workflows for all aspects of Report for America and making sure they run smoothly. These include the application, reviewing and selection processes for newsrooms and corps members; management and maintenance of newsroom and corp member information integration of workflows among various RFA teams; program and data needs for RFA staff; and management of periodic newsroom and corp member evaluation surveys, among other things. The Data and Information Manager reports to the Vice President of Program Development and is a remote position.
Key roles and responsibilities include:
Essential duties/Responsibilities
-Responsible for management of all RFA newsroom and corps member data, including but not limited to input, import, analysis, export, storage, and distribution of information and data sets and data points. Will work with current and future data management platforms, spreadsheets and related applications. Strong communication and editorial skills a must. Experience with customer relationship management (CRM) systems like Salesforce and spreadsheet-database hybrids like Airtable is a plus.
-Collaborate on development of data collection methods to improve upon and replace spreadsheets as a data repository/source of truth with a superior platform, in collaboration with GroundTruth’s IT team.
-Ensure that RFA sources of data are accurate and being relayed appropriately to organizational reporting tools. Partner with GroundTruth’s IT team to meet RFA’s data needs and coordinate with GroundTruth and RFA stakeholders. Ensure that data flows to external stakeholders (newsrooms and corps members) are reliable and meet the RFA program’s needs, including quarterly evaluation data. Maintain and regularly update RFA databases, including quarterly evaluation data from newsrooms and corps members (number of stories produced by corps members, etc.)
-Flag and escalate data problems that present as issues.
-Create, harmonize and manage workflows and processes across RFA and applicable GroundTruth Project teams including Corps Excellence, Training and Service, Local Sustainability, Admissions, Editorial Hub, IT, Finance, and others.
-Manage the application process and cycle for newsroom and corps member applications.
-Work with the Director of Applications and Vice President of Program Development to create an application timetable and deliverables list.
-Ensure that deliverable deadlines are met, by keeping participants and “owners” of certain tasks in this process on track.
-Monitor the application review process.
-Maintain and regularly update RFA databases, including quarterly evaluation data from newsrooms and corps members (number of stories produced by corps members, etc.)
-Flag and escalate data problems that present as issues.
-Work with the VP of Program Development, and partner with GroundTruth’s IT team to ensure that RFA has the technological platforms (both internal and external) to scale dramatically and provide excellent services to both newsrooms and reporters, as well as internal stakeholders.
-Deliver on RFA’a data and reporting needs, being aware of GroundTruth’s data technology needs, as coordinated with GroundTruth’s IT team, as design and implementation choices are made. Ensure that RFA’s data needs and functionalities are represented in organizational initiatives. Serve as a technical liaison in the partnership of GroundTruth and RFA technology workflows.
Experience:
A successful candidate will:
-Possess significant experience with creating and managing critical data processes and workflows for news organizations or similar organizations
-Have some familiarity with newsroom cultures
