The New York Times Looking for Associate Software Engineeer at New York, NY Full Time

About The Role The New York Times is looking for an Associate Software Engineer to join one of several teams that make up our Messaging Platforms group. As part of Messaging Platforms, your work will directly grow customer acquisition, engagement, and reader loyalty with new features on top of our existing platform that delivers a high-volume of personalized email content and mobile push notifications. You will work with other engineers, designers, and product managers. You’ll be a member of an organization that values empathy, collaboration, transparency, diversity, learning, and a whole lot of fun.
We use React and Redux for much of our front-end development, while our backend code is done using Go. We deploy our services using Drone, maintain our infrastructure with terraform, and host them in both Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Amazon Web Services (AWS).
This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters and reports to one of the Engineering Managers in the Messaging Platforms group.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the full development lifecycle of our products: development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and support of our systems.
- Complete assigned tasks independently; seek out guidance from the appropriate domain experts when needed.
- Collaborate across a diverse, geographically distributed team of engineers, designers, product owners, project managers, data analysts, and editors.
- Prioritize growth by learning the tools, resources, and processes that are used by the team; take ownership of personal improvement by soliciting and incorporating feedback from others.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
Basic Qualifications
- You have at least 1 year of experience working with a back-end programming language (Go preferred), or related educational experience.
- You write clean, modern, testable, and well-documented code.
Preferred Qualifications
- You are excited to contribute to the software development lifecycle, including planning & development, testing, monitoring and observability, and operational support.
- You are eager to explore new software languages, tools, and applications.
This role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$88,000 — $110,000 USD
