Scope of Position:

The primary function of this position is to assist the teacher both large and small groups of students with the assistance of the other teachers. Preschool Assistant will be charged with maintaining the protection, health, happiness, discipline, cleanliness, character, and skill development of all students. Overall, will assist the Teacher in activities for Kroc Preschool program while ensuring the student’s safety and wellbeing. 10-months out of the year assist in Preschool Promise Program and Kroc Preschool, other 2 months are assisting in camp and FAE programming, may work as camp counselor.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

General: Effective verbal and written communications, ability to multi task. Must be able to read, write and communicate in English. Must have ability to work and relate well with people. Patience, perseverance, and flexibility are essential for being a successful in this position.

Organization: The ability to maintain a directed schedule along with the ability to lead a large group through multiple projects in a timely manner. This position requires someone who is responsible, detail oriented and have the ability to take projects from beginning through completion.

Professional: The ability to work in a distinctively Christian environment. The ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement. The ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances. Able to work with limited supervision, and work in a team setting with other professionals. Exercise good judgment and comfortable taking initiative with projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Maintain the Code of Ethics policy, which has been established for the Kroc Center.
• Regular and punctual attendance is an essential job requirement.
• Help Establish and consistently enforce rules of behavior and The Salvation Army policies and discipline procedures to maintaining order in the classroom.
• Will communicate any student, parent, or staff issues with the Fine Arts & Education Coordinator and lead instructor immediately. Follow up with appropriate documentation as directed.
• Will keep student and staff issues confidential. Do not share issues with other students, parents or patrons, news organizations or staff who are not involved.
• Responsible for the maintenance of students’ personal medications.
• Drive RJKCCC vehicles as directed by management in order to transport students during off-site excursions following all RJKCCC and Salvation Army fleet procedures while driving vehicles.
• Ensure equipment is returned to appropriate designated area and area is cleaned upon completion of activity with group unless otherwise arranged.
• Maintain a safe working environment: report any and all facility defects/problems to the Fine Arts & Education Coordinator.
• Assist in emergencies or treatment of injured participants or staff. Follow up with completion of appropriate paperwork as directed.
• Assist with Preschool check in and out procedures according to protocol. Check ID of each person signing out a student.
• Assist in the development of lesson plans with classroom teacher for Kroc Preschool program.
• Will maintain an accurate head count of students at all times.
• Clearly and effectively communicate in a manner that children understand.
• Possess the ability to understand small children.
• Integrate special needs children in a positive and respectful manner.
• Teach basic skills such as colors, shapes, number and letter recognition, personal hygiene, social skills, and problem solving.
• Seek the participation of all students, and take student opinions into account.
• Use different teaching methods to incorporate all style of learning.
• Make learning a fun and exciting activity.
• Analyze and study performance and behavior of each and every child in the classroom and identify their strengths and weaknesses. Develop strategies for supporting their weaknesses and embedded in instruction and activities provided.
• Ability to inspire and motivate children to keep learning.
• Assist in classroom prep, setting up room and daily cleaning assignments.
• Adhere to Preschool Promise requirements for daily classroom activities and schedule.
• Participate in required ongoing training for Preschool Promise Grant.
• Be familiar with and help implement SPARK Quality Improvement standards into daily classroom procedures.
• Assist with Preschool Promise student assessments, screenings and observations.
• Assist with implementation of required curriculum.

Physical Requirements:

• Must be well groomed and adhere to the required dress code.
• Must be able to perform tasks of a repetitive nature without diminishing performance.
• Must be able to walk, bend, stoop, squat, twist body, stand for short/long periods of time, kneel, push, pull, have sense of touch, reach, grasp with hands and fingers, lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds unassisted, climb stairs, close vision, distance vision, talk, hear, have-eye hand coordination, have manual dexterity, speak and read, and working in noisy areas, as these movements are a regular requirement of this position.

Working Conditions:

This position may have frequent phone and in person contact with people from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused or frustrated.

May walk or stand on varied surfaces. May require work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.

Education and Work Experience:

• Required High School Diploma
• At minimum must meet qualifications for Aide 1 according to Oregon State Certified Child Care Center Rules; Preferred meet Aide 2 qualification.
• Preferred experience in early education setting, licensed or registered program or teaching experience

License and Certifications:

• Must have CPR/First Aid certification before first day with students.
• Must have a positive attitude toward helping and fostering children in their development.
• Enrollment in Oregon Central Background Registry
• Food handler’s card.
• Valid Oregon driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
