The Office of the President is seeking an outstanding and proven leader to serve as a trusted advisor and daily staff person to the President. The Chief of Staff to the President (COS) must possess excellent management, communication, and organizational skills, and demonstrate the highest standards of professional ethics and integrity. The COS must be adept at working with a wide range of stakeholders and constituents and must possess a highly developed sense of confidentiality. Reporting directly to the President, the COS will be responsible for tracking, analyzing, and providing advice on a full range of issues and initiatives. They must have a history of developing effective relationships with internal and external constituents and sophisticated interpersonal skills for navigating within a complex environment with varying demands and considerations. She or he must be deeply motivated to help the President serve the diverse students, faculty, staff of a preeminent research university as they teach, learn, create knowledge, and engage with society.

nResponsibilities: n
n
n
+ Conducts research, recommend actions, and provides advice to the President on complicated, sensitive, and confidential issues
n
+ Recognizes the top priorities of the President’s agenda and perspectives of key stakeholders, anticipating what the President will need in order to be prepared at all times
n
+ Assists in the effective allocation of the President’s time and prioritization of requests and commitments
n
+ Staffs the President as needed in meetings, on committees, and at events
n
+ Coordinates with the President, Provost, Executive Vice President, and other officers of the University and academic leaders to bring issues to resolution and leadership decisions to full implementation
n
+ Works collaboratively with campus leaders and staff in the office of the president to draft reports, proposals, briefings, presentations, speeches, correspondence, and other material on behalf of the President
n
+ Monitors and tracks major initiatives and priorities, providing regular reports to the President
n
+ Helps incubate new initiatives, often serving as an individual contributor and program manager while assisting the President to establish and grow leadership teams and staff
n
+ Monitors commitments made to and by the President, and ensures follow-through on those commitments
n
+ Initiates preparatory and follow-up meetings and communications on behalf of the President
n
+ Executes projects that require the utmost confidentiality and/or urgency for the President
n
+ Serves as a liaison and resource to leaders within the University and to external constituents
n
+ Oversees the annual operating budget and portfolio of discretionary funds for the President
n
+ Oversees day-to-day operations of the immediate office of the President
n
+ Builds a broad awareness of the talents of individual faculty members and the capabilities and strategic plans of the University’s diverse academic units, medical center, institutes and centers, and the national laboratories. Leverages that awareness and set o relationships to support the President in advancing the University’s initiatives, identifying and responding to philanthropic and other funding opportunities

+ Organizes senior leadership meetings and strategic planning retreats

+ Ability to move fluidly between being a strategic adviser and thought partner to senior leadership and focusing on the detail-oriented work of operations and administration with staff

+ Proven project management skills with experience managing to deadlines
n
+ Ability to understand and address complex interdependencies and competing preferences
n
+ Strong writing and communication skills, with experience producing executive level materials
n
+ Ability to develop, exercise, and foster multicultural awareness and contribute to cultivating an inclusive, diverse, and welcoming University community that respects and supports people of all backgrounds and identities

+ Ability to be resilient and strategic in the context of constantly changing external circumstances and evolving opportunities
