The Section of Gastroenterology, Hepatology at The University of Chicago
is consistently ranked among the best specialty nationally by U.S News
and World Report. With nearly 30 specialists on staff, our program plays
a leading role in the understanding of digestive diseases and in
developing innovative and successful treatments for patients. Since
forming the nation’s first full-time department of gastroenterology in
1927, our physicians have continually improved treatments for digestive
tract and related disorders by combining medical research, education,
and patient care at the highest level.

Job Summary

The Chang Lab is looking for a Staff Scientist to work on the analysis
and interpretation of large genomic datasets for research projects aimed
at understanding the contribution of gut microbiota to metabolic and
intestinal diseases.

Responsibilities

• Plans, executes, facilitates and advances technical/scientific
  research projects.
• Designs, develops and executes experimental protocols for research
  (including empirical protocols, computational, statistical methods,
  etc.).
• Collaborates with other researchers as appropriate.
• May take on lab-wide responsibilities such as mouse colony
  management.
• Participates in the preparation and writing of grant applications
  and reports, and co-authors scientific research manuscripts.
• May supervise other research staff.
• May present work at scientific meetings and provide peer review of
  grant applications and scientific manuscripts.
• The individual in this role will be involved in all aspects of the
  design, development, implementation, and analysis of research
  projects focused on inflammatory bowel/metabolic disease.
• Serves as a resource for collecting data and performing analysis.
  Facilitates and promotes a research project by providing scientific
  or intellectual information.
• Develops laboratory protocols and training on new techniques.
  Manage, analyze and make recommendations on complex data sets for
  research.
• Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7
years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:

• Experience in developing and implementing empirical genomic
  protocols.
• Experience with the analysis ofpopulation genetic data sets.
• Experience with assisting in the training, a strong publication
  record, and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in research.

• Knowledge in biochemistry and cell biology.
• Knowledge in bioinformatics methods and statistical tools for the
  analyses of genomic data.
