About This Opportunity
The Principal Software Engineer will design, develop, deploy, and operate scalable platforms and services to manage data collected and collated at TERN. The applicant will build robust solutions to bring disparate data collected at TERN together and make them analysis ready.
TERN is an Australian Government research infrastructure initiative to enhance Australia’s environmental research effort, particularly in the area of changes over time in ecosystems. TERN coordinates a national grid of field observation, sensors and remote sensing, which collectively provide open access data for researchers and other users in Australia and globally. TERN was established in 2009 by a National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) grant from the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE) and receives co-investment from state governments and partner institutions. Through a number of extensions and renewals of its grant, TERN’s project funding is currently in place until June 2023.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Responsible for all aspects of the data project life cycle including requirement gathering, system design, software development and deployment.
- Apply reusable software design patterns, write quality code and perform code reviews.
- Build software to high standards, including quality, reliability, and scalability.
- Engage with external and internal stakeholders to resolve technical problems.
- Work with the Data Services & Analytics Solution Architect to propose new technology solutions and methods to improve efficiency and engineering standards.

About You
- Tertiary qualification in IT, computer science, software engineering (or related field) with at least 8 years work experience in building complex software applications.
- Deep understanding of software design patterns and test-driven development.
- Highly developed technical skills in Python, JavaScript, ReactJS.
- Demonstrated expertise in multiple technologies including: Spark, Kafka, Airflow, Kubernetes, Docker, Grafana, and RESTful APIs.
- Demonstrated practical technical expertise in different databases including RDBMS, NOSQL and RDF store.
- Ability to use a wide variety of open-source technologies and cloud services (experience with OpenStack is beneficial).
- Demonstrated ability to develop and automate complex suites of unit tests, integration tests and API tests.
What We Can Offer
This is a Full-time, Fixed-term position until June 2023 at HEW Level 8.
The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $102,270.20 – $114,835.63 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $119,656.13 – $134,357.69 per annum.
