Who are we looking for?

The UKAEA have a great Public and Education Outreach Officer vacancy available on a permanent basis. Increasing public interest in science and in UKAEA’s work is vital, in particular to encourage young people to pursue interests and careers in STEM, and into fusion energy.

As the Public and Education Outreach Officer you will be involved with a variety of engaging projects. The role is very appealing to someone who is curious about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM), and this position allows for an exciting breadth scope to explore different ways to engage with young and public audiences.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, organised and knowledgeable individual with a background in science, communication or education. You will be working closely with the UKAEA Communications Group and will have a keen interest in STEM outreach and experience of delivering engaging activities for students and the general public.

What will you be responsible for?

• Overseeing the organisation of all school and university visits to UKAEA’s facilities, especially the smooth running and evaluation of the events themselves
• Assisting the outreach manager in effectively refurbishing the Sun Dome primary school fusion show, and longer term, be responsible for organising bookings and logistics of the Sun Dome planetarium workshop for schools and public events, as well as assisting with delivery and training of research staff to deliver the workshop
• Being a confident speaker on fusion to a range of education audiences from primary school through to university
• Supporting the Outreach Manager with public outreach activities, especially attendance at science festivals and exhibitions and open evenings
• Planning and deliver communication skills training, in particular training staff in presenting skills for young audiences and the general public
• Being the main point of contact with the UKAEA graduate programme – mentoring and guiding their development in communications and outreach activities

Essential skills, experience and competence required

• Interest and awareness of STEM and the National Curriculum
• Experience of delivering STEM outreach activities
• Demonstrable experience as a public speaker and presenter to a wide variety of differing audiences, in particular young students and families
• Excellent communication skills

Desirable skills, experience and competence

• Qualification or experience equivalent to degree in a scientific or engineering discipline
• Proven ability to prioritise tasks effectively
• Good team player
• Flexibility – willingness to multi-task and help others
