Under direct supervision of perioperative nursing, the equipment tech is a multi-skilled individual who will spend the vast majority of time ensuring that all operating room equipment are maintained in good condition and safe to use. Performs all perioperative support functions including those of an Operating Room Assistant, Surgical Support Technician, and a Sr. Surgical Support Technician as required based on the constantly changing demands and staffing in an OR suite. Fulfillment of the job duties requires the employee to have access to medication storage areas.
1. Establishes and maintains courteous and effective relationships with patients, visitors, co-workers, and other members of the health care team; demonstrates sensitivity and awareness to the needs of patients, visitors and co-workers and responds promptly to verbal and/or written instructions.
2. Uses appropriate body mechanics in moving, lifting and transporting surgical equipment and instrumentation.
3. Under the direction of the operating room nurse and surgical tech, delivers and sets up equipment appropriate for the surgical procedure.
4. Identifies equipment preventative maintenance and repair and performs integrity checks. Performs in-room troubleshooting of various pieces of equipment (i.e. OR tables, electrocautery, microscopes, ultrasound equipment, power equipment, etc).
5. Anticipates equipment conflicts; respond to urgent and emergent needs with alternative solution to ensure surgical team and circulator supported throughout the case.
6. Assists staff in moving equipment and returning equipment to proper area of storage.
7. Maintains patient safety during positioning including the lithotomy position, the prone position, and the lateral position.
8. Maintains cleanliness in assigned areas which includes equipment rooms and other specified locations.
9. Serves as liaison to Clinical Engineering for all operating room equipment overseen by the department.
10. Serves as liaison for the operating room, working with clinical engineering for all preventative maintenance and repair.
11. Takes action to correct observed risks to patient and staff safety.
12. Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
13. Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
14. Follows infection control policies and implements categories of isolation per departmental standard precautions and expanded precautions (i.e. contact, droplet, airborne).
15. Applies aseptic technique when carrying out procedures or following unit protocols that require sterile conditions.
16. Identifies Personal Protective Equipment and its indicated uses. Wears appropriate surgical attire according to policy in (and out) of the surgical environment (i.e. hat, shoe covers, scrubs, etc.).
