Position Highlights

The Southwest Institute for Research on Women (SIROW, https://sirow.arizona.edu) seeks a highly motivated and resourceful individual to join SIROW in striving for its vision of a society in which the well-being of women and families is paramount, resulting in their equity, empowerment, and prosperity. To this end, SIROW seeks someone to direct the WISE Program (https://wise.arizona.edu/) that works to motivate students to enter careers in STEM disciplines and to support them in their studies, particularly focusing on students of groups underrepresented in STEM fields.

The Director of WISE (Researcher/Scientist IV) will:
1) Direct and innovate the WISE internship program that includes University of Arizona undergraduate and graduate students who work on various WISE-related events, projects, and initiatives while learning a number of professional skills.
2) Develop external grant proposals (e.g., National Science Foundation and private foundations) to fund WISE-related recruitment and retention activities and to further University of Arizona’s research agenda with regard to STEM.
3) Direct and innovate WISE research projects focused on K-12 community college and University of Arizona outreach, recruitment, and retention of students in STEM fields.

The qualified candidate will also contribute to SIROW:
1) As a researcher developing their self-focused portfolio of research in line with SIROW’s mission.
2) As an instructor for SIROW’s graduate program, (https://sirow.arizona.edu/ma-program-design-evaluation) teaching two courses per year related to applied research for social change, program design, and program evaluation.

This is a .75 FTE benefits eligible fiscal year appointment with the possibility of increasing up to 1.0FTE in the future as additional funding is obtained.

Duties & Responsibilities

Implement WISE Program and SIROW vision and strategy using designated research and project/program implementation methodologies; and document project progress, impact, activities, and modifications:

• Interact and maintain liaison with the WISE Advisory Board, students, faculty, staff, and outside/community/industry agencies in facilitating WISE Program objectives.
• Direct WISE activities including, for example: 1) the WISE internship program; 2) recruitment of program participants, student interns, and volunteers utilizing the most appropriate promotional or marketing methods; and 3) WISE workshops, meetings, and conferences.
• Evaluate program effectiveness to develop and implement improved methods; devise evaluation methodology and implementation; analyze results; and take proper action based on outcomes.
• Perform needs assessment and examine needs of study participants, members, and the community for basis of program development and future research funding.
• Perform administrative activities related to the directorship of the WISE Program, including: 1) managing logistics for events, committee meetings, orientations, speaker visits, and retreats; 2) providing information and content to program materials; 3) managing funding and administering grants; and 4) performing tasks related to the daily operation of the WISE such as maintaining financial documentation.
• Attend training and professional development events; and monitor national and local trends related to gender and other group-based disparities in areas related to STEM.

Monitor and direct efforts of WISE project teams, interns, student workers, and external partners to ensure WISE program and research project goals are met and objectives realized:

• Communicate with leaders from collaborating agencies regarding project progress and staff performance.
• Maintain collaborative relationships with University of Arizona partners, industry partners, and community agencies in promoting WISE Program objectives.

Assist with the professional development of University of Arizona students and SIROW junior researchers:

• Teach two courses per year for SIROW’s graduate program.
• Provide mentorship to University of Arizona STEM students via WISE mentorship programs.

Obtain extramural funding:

• Obtain funding for the WISE Program (both independently and in partnership with University of Arizona faculty from collaborating University of Arizona departments). This includes obtaining extramural funding from sponsors such as NSF and private foundations. This also includes obtaining new funding and maintaining funding continuation from local industry partners; University of Arizona colleges and departments; and private donors.
• Obtain funding for self-focused portfolio of research in line with SIROW’s mission.
• Assist SIROW researchers with grant applications and other activities related to pursuing extramural funding.

Engage in project dissemination activities:

• Lead WISE Program reporting and dissemination activities, including: 1) financial reporting; 2) writing project progress and performance reports for funders and other stakeholders; 3) writing brief findings reports to be published online; 4) presenting on programs to stakeholders; 5) maintaining updated program websites; and 6) writing manuscripts for publication in scholarly journals.
• Assist with the promotion of SIROW as a premier innovative research institute, including providing editing and other support related to SIROW dissemination activities.

• Knowledge of University of Arizona STEM-related colleges, departments, and programs.
