The University of Brighton is seeking to appoint a Professor of Education to our highly successful School of Education. We welcome applications from senior academics with a track record of excellence in research, research leadership and knowledge exchange activity and who will help to drive forward our ambitious strategic plans to build on recent successes in research and knowledge exchange within the School and wider university.
This is an exciting point in the history of the university and the School of Education particularly, the legacy of which dates back as far as 1898. We are one of seven new Schools collaborating to realise the aims of our University of Brighton 2025 strategy, Practical Wisdom, through new structures that promote a sense of community, collegiality and coherence in our profile and portfolio. Making a difference through research and knowledge exchange is a key strategic priority area for the university and we are keen to appoint a Professor who will make a significant contribution to the realisation of our aspirations in key area of our work. The University of Brighton has also recently launched its Research and Knowledge Exchange Strategic Plan 2022-2025, with a focus on Global Challenges, Excellence, Nurturing Talent, Sustained Impact and International.
Our new Professor of Education will make a significant contribution to building on the very positive outcomes of our submission to the Education Unit of Assessment in REF2021, in which 78% of our research was assessed as 3-4*, with 76.5% of our research outputs rated as internationally excellent or world-leading, and 100 per cent of our research impact rated as very considerable or outstanding. The successful applicant will help us drive forward our internationally excellent and world-leading research and scholarship through their own research and knowledge exchange activity and through supporting others through their academic leadership. Our research currently centres around the following three themed groups:
We are also in the early stages of discussion around a new, interdisciplinary university Centre of Research Excellence (CORE), with education at its heart and we are excited about the potential to foster new collaborations and impact through this development in our School research environment. Our new Professor will be engaged in the process of helping to shape this new CORE.
As well as contributing significantly to our research culture and environment within the School, the appointed candidate will also work closely with colleagues to enhance our knowledge exchange portfolio, building on the university’s KEF submission and strategy and to nurture existing and develop new partnerships with external stakeholders and collaborators, supporting and promoting the extensive expertise of our staff in the process. We value the important contribution of knowledge exchange activity to our work as a School of Education within a local, regional, national and international community and see it as very closely connected to potential research impact.
The School of Education has a very well-established continuum of taught programmes from: undergraduate education and teacher education courses; postgraduate primary and secondary teacher education; apprenticeships; PGCert and masters programmes; and both a professional doctorate and PhD provision, which are also supported by the Brighton Doctoral College. We are recognised as an outstanding provider of initial teacher education by Ofsted and have an extensive partnership of schools and colleges across the south and southeast of England. We also have links with an expansive network outside of schools and colleges including early years, alternative and informal educational providers and settings. Our new Professor would make a valuable contribution to teaching, citizenship and leadership within our extensive portfolio.
The appointed candidate will work closely with the Dean and the Associate Dean for Research and Knowledge Exchange, supporting or taking on leadership within this particular strand of our work to continue to develop and promote a culture and environment in which all our staff and students can thrive and succeed.
The School of Education is situated in excellent facilities at our Falmer campus, nestled in the beauty of the South Downs countryside and just five miles from Brighton’s stunning sea front and vibrant city centre. It is a friendly and welcoming environment in which to work, and we pride ourselves on being a truly inclusive and anti-racist School and university, creating a sense of both belonging and becoming for all our students and staff.
For an informal discussion about the post, please contact either the Dean of the School of Education, Dr Cathy Gower at [email protected] or the Associate Dean for Research and Knowledge Exchange, Professor Andrew Hobson at [email protected].
