The School of Earth and Environment is seeking to appoint a full-time GIS / Spatial Data Science Manager.

The School of Earth and Environment is a new entity formed in late 2019. It brings together all the Earth and Environmental units at the University of Canterbury to take advantage of the opportunities for high impact research and teaching in our unique environmental setting of South Island, New Zealand; the Southern Ocean and Antarctica.

Āu Mahi | What You Will Do

You will manage the School’s GIS systems and software to ensure this support, to students and staff within the School, meet the required University regulations and integrate with other IT systems. The School is home to the Geographic Information Science (GIS), Geospatial Data Science and Remote Sensing at UC. We run well established teaching programmes in GIS, including undergraduate geography and remote sensing and a major in Geospatial Data in our new Data Science degree. In this role you are central to supporting teaching across all these programmes.

Mōu | Who You Are

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience in spatial data science including:

• skilled knowledge and experience with ESRI products, including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online
• familiarity with open-source GIS products e.g. QGIS, GeoDA
• experience with remote sensing products e.g. ENVI, Google Earth Engine
• experience with programming, preferably R or Python scripting

You will have a commitment to excellent staff and student interactions, ability to demonstrate the use of products for individuals and groups, and willingness to keep learning to stay current on technical skills.

Salary appointment for this role, depending on skills and experience, will range between $87,664 – $107,518,
