The University of Colorado Boulder’s CUbit Quantum Initiative (CUbit) encourages applications for an Executive Director. Situated in Colorado’s thriving Front Range, this is a unique opportunity to shape the future of quantum information science and engineering. CUbit is a cross-campus effort that uses the university’s prominence in quantum information science and technology, partners with regional universities and national laboratories, and links closely with quantum-intensive companies.
The Executive Director works with CUbit leadership to set the overall strategic direction of the initiative. They will work with CUbit researchers to identify, coordinate and successfully capture large-scale research opportunities, as well as support the translation of quantum research to operations through networks of industry partners. This position works with CU government, industry and foundation relations teams to attract external sponsors at the national, state and local levels to grow the impact of quantum. They will work with the Faculty Director for CUbit Workforce and Education to develop educational pipelines, often connecting CU Boulder with other Colorado institutions of higher education. The Executive Director reports to the Vice Chancellor for Research & Innovation and Dean of the Institutes.

Who We Are
The CUbit Quantum Initiative is a multidisciplinary research hub at CU Boulder dedicated to the development and advancement of thriving research. We have four technology pillars: Quantum sensing and metrology, quantum networks and communications, Quantum Matter and Dynamics, and Quantum Computing and Simulation, each led jointly by scientists and engineers, and each targeting ambitious advances. CU Boulder has an outstanding history of accomplishment in quantum, including its recent selection as one of just three NSF-funded Quantum Leap Challenge Institutes and its four quantum-based Nobel Prizes. CUbit spans the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Engineering and Applied Science, and JILA, a joint institute of CU Boulder and the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST). The university is rapidly growing faculty capacity in quantum science and engineering, adding to an already world-class roster that includes more than 30 faculty members as well as a vibrant and motivated community of postdoctoral scholars and graduate students.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Strategy and Leadership:
Develop the strategic vision for CUbit with key partners and operationalize that vision by drawing on an existing consortium of CUB quantum programs, researchers, industry partners, federal agencies, foundations, and collaborative bodies such as the Quantum Economic Development Consortium.
Identify large-scale interdisciplinary research opportunities that align with CU Boulders strengths and then work with teams of researchers to craft compelling and successful proposals that capture those opportunities.
Develop pathways for translating CUB quantum research into economic impact, often working with CUBs Venture Partners, as well as Colorado quantum industries.
Serve as a dynamic and effective advocate for quantum programs, individually and as a campus-wide consortium, to university administration, to industry, and to officials at the state and federal levels.
Develop and implement CUbits strategic vision with campus collaborators and external partners, both state-wide and nationally.
Facilitate communication and collaboration across teams, functional areas, and organizations; represent CUbit at university, state, and national meetings; make presentations to partners, funding agencies, professional associations, and economic development groups.
Research Development and Translation:
Collaborate with researchers to identify large-scale opportunities, work to align researchers to those opportunities, and facilitate the successful completion of the proposals and contract talks that will lead to a successful capture.
Identify translation pathways in collaboration with researchers, whether through new or existing industry partnerships that will result in quantifiable economic impacts for the state and the region. Communicate the impact of the quantum research enterprise and its translation into economic impact to internal and external audiences.
Program Management and Communication:
Support all aspects of the CUbit effort, including education and workforce, DEI efforts, and industry and government networks. Work to strengthen research collaborations across the campus and with other universities and national laboratories. Manage the CUbit budget.
Serve as the primary point of contact for companies seeking quantum research collaborations with university researchers.
With the support of the communications staff, responsible for the content of the website and monthly newsletter.

This position is primarily on-site with some remote work hours.
What We Can Offer
The hiring range for this position is $150,000-$180,000 annually.
This position is eligible for a signing bonus. Relocation assistance is available for eligible candidates.

What We Require
A Master’s degree in a STEM field, business and/or government administration, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience will substitute.
Six years of experience developing and advancing research initiatives with a university and developing partnerships between universities and industry.
What You Will Need
A forward-thinking leadership approach with a deep understanding of how to support an academic research enterprise and how to translate applied research into the marketplace.
A strong record of engagement with external constituents in government, industry, and private foundations, both nationally and internationally.
Ability to build the CUbit Quantum Initiative through shared passion with faculty, staff, students, government, and industry partners.
Ability to strengthen CUbits research infrastructure and promote collaborative efforts.
Involvement and/or expertise in leading multiple major academic, national laboratory, and/or industrial institutions in the conduct of research in quantum information science or engineering. Familiarity with the language and concepts of quantum science and engineering.
Demonstrated ability to develop effective teams to capture significant research opportunities.
Excellent organizational skills and communication skills.
Broad understanding of federal and state research structures and appropriation trends.
